Second-round Hardwood wins for Wheeling, St. Viator

The Wheeling and St. Viator boys basketball teams both bounced back from first-round losses in the 40th Hardwood Classic to win their consolation bracket games Thursday at Wheeling.

Those two programs will meet in a consolation semifinal at 2 p.m. Friday.

Michael Best was the man of the moment for Wheeling.

He hit a late 3 and a couple of free throws late to help the Wildcats hang on against Grayslake Central 68-67.

Best finished with a career-best 31 points, finishing 10-for-13 from the floor, including an astounding 6-for-7 from 3-point range.

Jeremy Kim had 12 points and a team-best 5 assists, while Phil Bucko finished with 9 points along with 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals for Wheeling (5-8).

Grayslake Central had three big scoring performances, as Jack Spalding had 20 points, Alec Novak had 18 and Tony Crews 13.

St. Viator got off to a quick start and then outscored Deerfield 29-16 in the second half to win 55-41.

Treyvon Calvin paced the Lions with 14 points, while Peter Lambesis had 12 and Jeremiah Hernandez had 10.

St. Viator (9-2) was sharp at the foul line, making 14 of 17 tries. Hernandez had a team-best 4 assists and Calvin led the way in rebounding with 5.

Maine West 70, Notre Dame 61: Senior guard Milos Dugalic made 8 of 14 field goal attempts and went 4-for-8 from 3-point range on his way to a game-high 27 points in second-round action at Wheeling.

Darrington Bates finished with 12 points and Julian Dones had 11 for the Warriors, who advance to a 12:15 p.m. Friday matchup against Vernon Hills in the consolation semis.

Vernon Hills topped Dundee-Crown 47-41 on Thursday.

Hoffman Estates 52, Glenbard South 49 (OT): Adrian Punzalan and Marshall Davis both hit 3s in overtime, when the Hawks outscored the Raiders 8-5 to clinch a third-place finish in tournament play at Glenbard West.

Marquez Woodard and Brendan Thompson both had 12 points to lead the way for Hoffman Estates (7-7).

Brandon Whiteside led Glenbard South with a game-high 18 points.

Leyden 69, Glenbard North 50: The Eagles' Ocean Johnson came up with a memorable finale in tournament play at Glenbard West, making 15 of 26 field goals and 6 of 8 free throws to finish with a career-best 41 points.

Included in Johnson's big night was a 5-for-11 effort from 3-point range.

Elkin Mejia had 7 points and Jacob Fiala had 6 as Leyden finished 2-3 in the tournament.

Moline 46, Hersey 43: The Huskies dropped a second straight in tournament play at Pekin.

Hersey outscored Moline in every period except the second quarter, and the 14-3 disparity there proved to be too much to overcome.

Matt Hanushewsky and Rocco Ronzio both finished with 8 points for the Huskies (5-8).

Moline had a big advantage at the foul line, making 15 of its 24 tries. Hersey made 3 of its 5 attempts.

Mt. Carmel 44, Hersey 42: Rocco Ronzio made three 3s and teammate Davis Belford also had 9 points, but the Huskies dropped their third straight tournament contest.

Mt. Carmel's Joshua Redic led all scorers with 24 points, including four 3s.

Herseys wraps up the tournament with an 11 a.m. Friday contest against Freeport.

Rolling Meadows 66, Schaumburg 57: Max Christie didn't miss at the foul line, making all 12 of his free throws to help the Mustangs improve to 1-2 in tournament play at York's Jack Tosh Holiday Classic.

Ryan Carney and Christie both finished with 21 points, and Gio Carrillo had 17. Rolling Meadows finished 23-for-24 at the foul line, with Carrillo making all 7 of his attempts and Carney going 3-for-3.

The scoring was even through most of the game - with the exception of the second quarter, when Rolling Meadows (5-7) outscored Schaumburg 20-8.

The Saxons got a game-high 22 points from Heze Trotter, who went 6-for-8 from 3-point range. He also had 4 assists and 3 steals.

Dom Tyler had 9 points and Michael Hodges 8 for the Saxons (4-11).

Sandburg 78, Elk Grove 53: Tyler Selvig scored a team-high 14 points but the Grenadiers couldn't match Sandburg's firepower in third-round play at York.

Dylan Ingebrigtsen and Shivam Amin both finished with 9 points and Ryley Rathman had 9 for Elk Grove (1-13).

Marvin Agwomoh (16 points) and Sami Ismail (12) led the way in scoring for Sandburg.

Christian Liberty falls twice: In the tournament the Chargers are hosting, they suffered a pair of setbacks.

Northtown Academy topped CLA 64-43 in an afternoon matchup before Westminster Christian earned a 63-51 victory over the Chargers in the evening.

The two-day tourney concludes Friday. Christian Liberty's games are at 2 p.m. (against Morgan Park) and at 6:30 p.m. (against North Shore Country Day).
