Caudle and Co. keep Vernon Hills winning

Kayla Caudle notched her seventh double-double in seven games, and Vernon Hills' girls basketball team defeated Streamwood 57-49 in second-day action of the Libertyville winter tournament Wednesday.

Caudle, who missed seven games earlier in the season with an ankle injury, had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kylie Bunning added 13 points, 3 assists and 3 steals for the Cougars, while Daniella Jarrell contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds. The game was close for 3½ quarters until Vernon Hills (10-4, 2-0 tourney) started to gain separation. The Sabres were down 5 at half, but outscored the Cougars to cut it to 2 at the end of the quarter.

Vernon Hills got a few stops, scored a couple baskets and finished the game at the free-throw line.

"Streamwood came out strong and it took a while for us to match their physicality," Cougars coach Paul Brettner said. "We got in foul trouble both halves, but were able to overcome that. Coach (George) Rosner always has his teams playing hard."

Vernon Hills plays Libertyville at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Libertyville 51, Indianapolis 35: At Libertyville. Lydia Crow sank three 3-pointers and scored 17 points, Margaret Buchert added 16 points, and the Wildcats improved to 2-0 in their own tournament.

Lauren Huber (10 points) also scored in double figures for Libertyville (7-7), which plays Vernon Hills at 10 a.m. Thursday in third-day action of the tourney.

"Our bench gave us good, productive minutes," Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen said.

Antioch 48, Wheaton Academy 30: At Lisle, for the first time this season, the Sequoits controlled a game throughout, beginning with possession of the opening tip that resulted in an Noor Abdellatif layup and ending with an 18-point win to start the Holiday Cage Classic.

Piper Foote led all scorers with a career-high 18 points (four 3-pointers), and her aggressive defense allowed her to pick up 5 steals. Olivia Ori put up 9 points and had a team-high 5 assists, and Taylor Feltner rounded out the top Sequoits scorers with 8 points and 4 assists.

Antioch coach Tim Borries said his team's two other starters, Rachel Phillips and Abdellatif, were integral in the win because of the energy they brought to both ends of the floor. Phillips led the team in rebounds (6) and steals (6), and Abdellatif pulled in 4 boards and had 2 steals.

Antioch (3-8) plays Walther Christian at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Marian Catholic 46, Lake Zurich 43: At Montini, the Bears lost their opening game in the ninth annual tournament in Lombard.

Lake Zurich (8-7), which lost its third game in a row, plays St. Joseph at 9:45 a.m. Thursday.

Carmel 34, Deerfield 31: At Warren, Ranya Jamison had 11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists, and the Corsairs won the defensive battle to improve to 2-0 in the Blue Devil Classic.

Caitlin Teehan added 10 points for Carmel (9-6), which plays Warren at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Lake Forest 53, Phillips 37: At Warren, Ellie Pearson had 18 points and 7 rebounds, as the Scouts improved to 2-0 in the Blue Devil Classic.

Grace Tirzmalis added 9 points for Lake Forest, which led 21-7 after one quarter, 33-18 at halftime and 45-21 after three.

Lake Forest plays Grayslake Central at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Marian Central 56, Mundelein 41: At Grant, Vannessa Garrelts scored 19 points to lead the Hurricanes, who improved to 10-6 and 2-0 in the tournament.

Morgan Frank had 15 points, including four 3-pointers, for Mundelein (3-10, 0-2).
