Stevenson starts with win at Dundee-Crown

Klaire Steffens had 21 points and 9 rebounds, as Stevenson's girls basketball team stayed hot by beating Resurrection 55-34 in opening-round action of the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic on Tuesday night.

Avery King and Kiana Cencula (three 3-pointers) added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Patriots (10-3), who won their seventh game in a row. King and Cencula each also had 5 rebounds. Cencula dished out 3 assists.

Stevenson led only 12-10 after one quarter but outscored Resurrection 18-10 in the second and 15-8 in the third. The Patriots will play Naperville Central at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Marian Central 56, Waukegan 43: At Grant, Miami of Ohio-bound Vannessa Garrelts scored 17 points to lead the Hurricanes (9-6) in first-round action of the tournament.

Grant 52, Mundelein 40: At Grant, the host Bulldogs won their tournament opener, stretching their winning streak to five games and improving their record to 8-3 on the season.

Mundelein fell to 3-9.

On Wednesday, Mundelein plays Marian Central at 5:30 p.m., followed by Grant against North Chicago at 7 p.m.
