Libertyville sinks Streamwood in Rosner's 1000th game

Add another milestone to the list of them achieved by veteran Streamwood girls basketball coach George Rosner.

A Tuesday morning matchup in tournament play at Vernon Hills counted as the 1,000th in his career. Host Libertyville outlasted the Sabres 64-48.

"I really haven't thought about it, but I've coached for a very long time," said Rosner, who's in his 37th season. "It's a lot of years and a lot of games. I've never expected it, and just took it a year at a time. I never expected to get to 1,000, or even thought about 1,000. I guess it means that I've put in a lot of time, and it's been worth it."

The Sabres (3-9, 0-1) were led by Monica Brown with 13 points and Maddi Exline with 10 on Tuesday.

Libertyville (6-7, 1-0) scored the game's first 9 points and led 14-4 after the opening quarter.

Libertyville held a 29-19 lead at the break and wouldn't let Streamwood get closer than 9 in the second half. The Wildcats led 48-33 going into the final quarter.

"We didn't have a good start, that was key," Rosner said. "We managed to come back by making our free throws to get to a reasonable score. Every time we would cut it, (Libertyville) would go on a run. I really didn't think we had legs left at the end."

Margaret Buchert led the Wildcats by scoring 12 of her game-high 15 points in the second half. Freshman Lauren Huber added 12 points and 8 rebounds and Lydia Crow also chipped in 12 points, all on 3s.

"(Streamwood) has some firepower - they're a good 3-point shooting team and they like to go full-court pressure," Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen said. "When you have a lead you can't relax at all, because they can put up 6 or 8 points in a hurry. Whenever, they had a run, we responded with our own run. We responded well in the second half with our movement on defense. We got much better as the game progressed."

On Wednesday, pool play continues with Libertyville going against Indianapolis (Ind.) at 10 a.m., followed by Streamwood playing Vernon Hills at 11:30 a.m. Both games will be in Libertyville's West gym.
