Lakes wins twice at Richmond-Burton

Sara Smith had 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists, Mia Edwards added 14 points and 6 rebounds, and Lakes' girls basketball team beat Prairie Ridge 56-45 Saturday at Richmond-Burton to win its pool in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic for the third year in a row.

Lakes (5-8, 3-0 tourney), which defeated Marian Central by the same 56-45 score earlier in the day, advances to Monday's 6 p.m. semifinal against McHenry at McHenry.

Against Prairie Ridge, Lakes also got a big game from Paule Ceneac, who had 9 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks. Kylie Jozwik and Brittany Washington added 7 points apiece. Washington hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help extend the lead.

"Tough post-lunch game against Prairie Ridge," Eagles coach Brian Phelan said. "Sara Smith played well all day. Our bigs, Mia and Paule, played great interior defense and battled on the boards. Kylie Jozwik hit a number of big shot today too."

Smith had 14 points against Marian Central. Edwards, Jozwik and Washington each had 10.

Stevenson 58, Libertyville 33: Klaire Steffens led all scorers with 25 points and every Stevenson player saw court time as the Patriots improved to 8-3 overall and in a tie for first place in the North Suburban Conference.

Next up for Stevenson is a game against visiting Lake Zurich on Thursday.

Warren 54, Mundelein 26:

Warren 54, Mundelein 26: Jordyn Hughes made three 3s and finished with a game-best 17 points to help the visiting Blue Devils to a North Suburban Conference win.

Kaylen Dickson contributed 14 points (and three 3s) for Warren, and Kendall Klatt paced the Mustangs with 12 points.

Mundelein 47, Grayslake North 43: On Friday, the host Mustangs outscored the Knights 17-10 in the final quarter to come away with a nonconference win.

Morgan Frank led the way for Mundelein with 15 points and Hannah Buscher had 14.

Junior guard Jordyn Gerdes made four 3s and led all scorers with 18 points for Grayslake North.

at Richmond-Burton: Wauconda had widely differing experiences in Northern Illinois Holiday Classic action, first falling 50-33 to Marengo and later coming up with a 59-46 win against Johnsburg.

"It was the tale of two teams today," said Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis. "We struggled through the morning with execution, we didn't communicate on the floor and there seemed to be a lid on the basket.

"As bad as we were in the morning, we were just the opposite in the afternoon. We came out with energy and had a tremendous first quarter."

Against Johnsburg, the Bulldogs led 17-2 after that first period. Allie Tylka had a huge game, finishing with 26 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 blocks and 6 steals. Po Kimbell had 13 points and Elise Deaver 10.

Tylka had a team-best 12 points against Marengo.

at McHenry: Round Lake dropped a pair of Northern Illinois Holiday Classic contests, falling 50-48 in overtime against Woodstock North and 39-33 against Hoffman Estates.

Diane Flade and Emily Etherington led the Panthers with 9 points apiece against Woodstock North, and Etherington had a team-best 12 against Hoffman.
