Maine West earns top seed at Dundee-Crown tournament

The undefeated Maine West girls basketball team has earned the top seed for the 35th Annual Komaromy Classic Tournament at Dundee-Crown.

The Warriors (11-0), who won their first D-C title since 1997 last year, will open play in the tournament at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 26 against Barrington.

Naperville Central (9-1) is the No. 2 seed and will face Buffalo Grove at 4 p.m. in its Dec. 26 opener. The Redhawks fell to Maine West 62-47 in last year's title game.

If the seeds hold, the championship game could be between programs that have won a combined eight Dundee-Crown titles - Maine West has a record six D-C championships, the first of three-straight coming in 1987, while Naperville Central won the title in 2002 and 2003. Fenwick also has six D-C titles.

The tournament will open at 10 a.m. on Dec. 26 with Hampshire taking on unbeaten Hononegah (8-0). Hononegah plays Naperville Central on Saturday at the Sterling Shootout. Hampshire, which was in the D-C field in the tournament's early years, returns after spending the past several years at the Lisle Holiday Cage Classic.

The remainder of the first-round games include New Trier vs. South Elgin at 11:30 a.m., Prospect vs. Fenwick at 1 p.m., Stevenson vs. Resurrection at 5:30 p.m., Dundee-Crown taking on tournament newcomer Trinity at 7 p.m. and Maine South vs. St. Charles North at 8:30 p.m.

The championship game is set for 8 p.m. on Dec. 29.
