Buffalo Grove runs to 2-0 by topping Glenbrook South

Buffalo Grove used a pair of 11-point runs to defeat Glenbrook South on Wednesday night at the Bison Classic.

The Bison won 55-49 to improve to 2-0 on the season, and it was their second straight 6-point win. BG defeated Grayslake Central 60-54 on Monday.

"Starting out 2 and 0 is what we've been talking about for awhile," said BG guard Jack Vaselaney. "We knew these teams and we weren't about to take them lightly. We tried to put the pedal to the metal, and obviously we had different schemes for the first game and the second game - and Mac (Camardo) had a big game tonight."

Camardo, a 6-foot-6 senior center, scored a game-high 18 points. And he led BG to a hot start as the Bison scored the first 11 points of the contest.

"Tonight we knew that they (Glenbrook South) didn't do that well with that zone on the bottom," said Vaselaney, "and we knew that Mac was going to be able to take advantage.

"I've played with Mac since I've been in sixth grade, and I haven't seen too many people who have been able to guard him."

Camardo made a great feed on a bounce pass to teammate Tom Trieb in the opening seconds, and Trieb finished with a layup to put the Bison on top.

The senior had a couple of boards as well as a block and a bucket early as BG led 11-0 with 3:33 remaining In the 1st quarter.

"It was a huge momentum shift," said Camardo of the quick Bison beginning.

Glenbrook South finished 8-of-20 from 3-point range, and the Titans hit 4 consecutive 3s as they grabbed a 25-24 halftime lead.

But after Will King of the Titans opened the third quarter with a layup, BG once again scored 11 unanswered points to take back control of the game, with Trieb and Vaselaney hitting 3s during the rally.

BG clamped down on defense in the fourth quarter, but the Titans were able keep the game close behind the play of King and some hot shooting by Jimmy McMahon (three 3s).

Vaselany and classmate Caleb Mayhorn, both seniors, sank 2 clutch free throws late to help BG seal the deal.

King led Glenbrook South led his team with 14 points, while Vaselaney scored 11 for BG and Trieb added 9 points.

Mayhorn added 8 points for the Bison, while Carmody controlled the boards for BG with a game-high 8 rebounds.

"Our coaches have been instilling in our team, this year and past years, that in every game each team is going to make a run," said Camardo. "The key is just to make sure that we contain their run and keep pushing forward."
