Punzalan's 3 lifts Hoffman Estates

Senior guard Adrian Punzalan hit the final basket, a 3-pointer, to help Hoffman Estates's boys basketball team to a second straight victory to start the season.

The Hawks improved to 2-0 by topping Niles West 49-46 in tournament play at Glenbrook North on Tuesday.

Glenbrook North 51, Hersey 45: The Huskies were competitive against a second straight foe in tournament play at Glenbrook North but suffered a second straight defeat.

Junior forward Rocco Ronzio led Hersey with 14 points, including four 3s. Senior forward Joe Nugent finished with 7 points.

Senior Max Knebelkamp led the Spartans with 14 points.

Leyden 67, Wheeling 48: The Wildcats slipped to 1-1 after falling to the Eagles in tournament play at Ridgewood.

Phil Bucko (14 points), Michael Best (9) and Joe Jordan (8) led the scoring effort for Wheeling.

Lake Forest Academy 49, Fremd 40: The Vikings slipped to 1-1 after a tournament loss at Mundelein.

Ryan Martin scored 13 points, and Bryce Hopkins and Isiah Turner had 8 apiece for Fremd.

Deerfield 71, Elk Grove 30: Tyler Selvig scored a team-best 15 points as the Grens dropped their second straight in tourney play at Mundelein.

Deerfield senior forward Zach Rothenberg led all scorers with 17 points.

Jacobs 59, Rolling Meadows 39: The Golden Eagles limited the Mustangs (0-2) to 14 first-half points in tournament play at Palatine. Jacobs improved to 2-0.

St. Charles East 68, Schaumburg 57: The host Saints picked up a second-round win against the Saxons in Ron Johnson tournament play.
