Huntley's late run fells Streamwood

In a game of runs, Huntley made the last one.

The Red Raiders outscored Streamwood 11-4 to close out the game and come away with a 34-31 win in the Dundee-Crown girls basketball Thanksgiving tournament.

Madison Wash led a balanced attack with 10 points for Huntley, which secured its first win of the season while Streamwood dropped to 0-4.

The Raiders clamped down defensively in the second half, holding Streamwood to 14 points after the break.

"Mallory Moffett and Anna Seng did a great job defensively on their two best players, number 12 (Mandy Mien) and number 20 (Andrea Bracey)," said Huntley coach Steve Raethz. "Our team defensively was much tighter in the second half when it needed to be."

"I was just proud of the way our young kids stepped up. We had a lot of people making contributions down the stretch."

The Sabres led 27-23 after a putback by Becky Roncone in the fourth quarter. Moffett answered with a 3-pointer for Huntley, pulling the Raiders within 1. Buckets by Wash on back-to-back possessions made it 30-27 and the Sabres never recovered.

Moffett finished with 8 points, and Kamsi Nwogu and Raquel Radermacher added 6 apiece for Huntley. Radermacher also grabbed 9 rebounds.

Mien finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 steals for Streamwood. Bracey scored 8 points and Roncone 7 as those three accounted for all of the Sabres' points.

"Defensively, we held them to a decent amount of points, but at the same time, most of their baskets were layups, so I can't be happy defensively," said Streamwood coach George Rosner. "Offensively, we just didn't execute very well. When you're 0-4 and you've lost the last three games by a total of 7 points, there's not a lot to be happy about."

Streamwood raced out to a 10-2 lead, with Mien scoring 6 of the points. Twice she got steals that led to breakaway layups. Huntley roared back to take the lead before Streamwood came back again. In all, there were 5 lead changes in the relatively low-scoring game.

Streamwood's defense forced the Red Raiders into 22 turnovers, including 13 in the first half, but Huntley got some extra shots by controlling the backboards. Led by Radermacher and Nwogu, with 6 rebounds, the Raiders maintained a 26-17 edge on the glass.
