Spiwak gets 20 as Rolling Meadows tops Lake Zurich

Rolling Meadows' girls basketball team earned its first win of the season on Friday night, posting a 74-51 decision over host Lake Zurich (0-2) in the Turkey Thriller tournament. The Mustangs (1-1) were led by senior Melissa Spiwak's career-high 20 points while junior Alexa Davis added a career-high 18.

"I was impressed by how our kids responded to a rough opening night against Rock Island (68-38 loss) on Wednesday," said Mustangs coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "We were balanced on the offensive end and Alexa Davis and Melissa Spiwak set the pace for us."

Other top scorers for Meadows were junior Lily Greifenstein (11 points), sophomore Susannah Holifield (9 points) and sophomore Bridget Rolla (7 points).

Rock Island 60, Fremd 35: Rock Island (2-0), which features two of the state's top players in Bre Beal and Cryslyn Carr, opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run and never looked back in the Turkey Thriller contest played at Fremd.

"Credit Rock Island," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "When you have a 6-foot-5 center and a 6-2 future McDonald's All-American, the rim can get a bit smaller on you. I like the shots we got and took, they just didn't go down."

Freshman Ruthie Montella (8 points), sophomore Ella Burns (7) and sophomore Olivia Hill (5) led the Vikings (1-1). Montella, Burns, Colleen Kennedy and Hill each had a 3-pointer.

"There's much to learn from this game," Yates said. "Rock Island is a fantastic team. They are one of the top teams in the state. Our kids got a chance to compete against a great team and see where we stand.

"Other than the last four minutes of the second quarter and the first four minutes of the third quarter we did a bunch of very positive things. Our best basketball is ahead of us."

Carr had 25 points and Beal 22.

"They might be the best 1-2 punch in the state," Yates said. "We wanted to force them to make outside shots - and they hit nine 3-pointers. They are a special team."

Fremd led 16-13 after one quarter.

"I was very pleased with our start, "Yates said. "We knocked down some shots and grabbed the lead early and our defense was giving them problems."

Rock Island closed the second quarter on a 10-0 run. "We got sloppy with the ball and they got some easy run-out scores," Yates said. "Their confidence changed very quickly."

Fremd cut the lead back down to 14 points late in the third quarter at 42-28.

"Our bench (Crystal Kim, Burns, Montella, Grace LaBarge and Danielle Lovelace) gave us some great energy and allowed us cut their lead down," Yates said.

Fremd hit six field goals in the first quarter but only made six the rest of the game.

"We needed to shoot well to beat this team," Yates said. We did to start the game but could not consistently hit them the rest of the way."

Maine West 83, Hoffman Estates 11: The Warriors ran their record to 3-0 in the Hoffman Estates tournament as Alisa Fallon (15 points, 6 rebounds), Jocelyn Jacob (12 points), Angela Dugalic (12 points), Rachel Kent (10) and Bianca Albo (9 points) led the way against the Hawks (1-2). Albo and Fallon each connected for three 3-pointers. Catherine Johnson had 11 steals.

York 49, Prospect 37: Senior Emily Frasco scored a season-high 24 points for the Knights, who finished 2-2 in the York tournament.

"The score is not a reflection of how close the game was," said Knight coach Gabrielle Lovin. "We were down 11 points in the first quarter and came back right before half. When we worked together and passed well we were able to get high quality shots. Hats off to York for the win."

Downers Grove North 55, Conant 33: Junior Hannah Shulman (11 points, two 3-pointers) led the Cougars (1-3) in their final game of the York tournament.
