Balanced Maine West off and running at Hoffman tourney
A balanced attack in which 14 of 15 girls made it into the scoring column led Maine West's girls basketball team to a 65-26 victory over Proviso West in the opening round of the fifth annual 'Pilgrim Classic' Thanksgiving tournament at Hoffman Estates High School.
Warriors four-year starter Rachel Kent began her final prep season by scoring a game-high 13 points on Tuesday night.
Teammate Jocelyn Jacobs added 8 points and 4 rebounds while Catherine Johnson handed out 5 assists.
West comes back in second-round action on Thursday when they face St. Charles North at 7:30 p.m.
Wheeling 36, Round Lake 20: Sophomore guard Chloe Drozdz scored 13 points while classmate Sophia Stanke (two 3-pointers) added 8 as Wheeling won its opening game of the Maine East Thanksgiving tournament.
Junior Nosa Igiehon chipped in 5 points for the Wildcats who led 14-2 at halftime. Junior Tommy Jean Helms tossed home a 3-pointer for Wheeling.
Conant 47, St. Francis 38: Conant improved its record to 1-1 in the York tournament.
Trinity 55, Prospect 43: Birmingham-Alabama recruit Emily Frasco tossed in 14 points, followed by Jessica Kowalczyk (8), Margherite Pettenuzzo (7 points) and Sara Biesterfeldt (6) for Prospect (1-1) in the second round of the York tournament.
Leyden 58, Fenton 49: Senior guard Pamela Colmenares scored a game-high 16 points with a 3-pointer as Leyden earned a win in its first game of the Addison Trail/Fenton tournament.
Harper 63, Oakton 43: Kaela Drum (17 points), Ashley Shapiro (16) and Maggie O'Donnell (16) led Harper College's women's basketball team.
