Maine South runs away from Libertyville

Meegan Fahy made sure that Maine South got off to a fast start Wednesday night against visiting Libertyville.

Make that lightning fast.

The sophomore scored a quick bucket, then grabbed 3 early rebounds to pace the Hawks to a 15-7 lead after one quarter.

Then in the second period, Fahy for all accounts and purposes helped put the game away.

Fahy scored 10 points in the second as Maine South ran to a 53-20 girls basketball victory in a nonconference battle of a couple of 18 win teams.

"I was super excited to play tonight, because Libertyville is a really good team," said Fahy. "I knew they would come out hard, and they did, but we came out hard as well and it was a great win."

"Meegan is a special basketball player," said Hawks coach Jeffrely Hamann. "She's come a long way. She's a sophomore who was on our freshman A team last year, and she's really worked on her game.

"Her success is a direct result of her overall hard work and her teammates believing in her."

Sophomore Kate Rule had a 3-point play in the second stanza for Libertyville, but Maine South's 6-foot-1 senior, Emily Pape, scored 5 straight points to extend the Hawks' lead.

Then Fahy took over. She had a 3-point play, got a steal and layup to make it 23-7, then drove the lane and had another layup to make it 25-7.

To cap it off, Fahy got another steal and fed Pape for a bucket moments later and the advantage was 20.

Maine South. (19-9) maintained a 32-12 lead to start the second half, but Libertyville opened up the third quarter with a spark.

Kate Rule hit a free throw, then teammates Emily Fisher and Kristina Kotzan drove in for layups as the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to start the period.

But right after that, Pape put an end to the Libertyville (18-8) surge with a quick layup, then a 3-pointer to extend the Hawks' lead.

Maine South's Caitlyn Leyden got a steal to open the fourth quarter, and fed Caroline Barker for a bucket that led to a 48-17 lead.

That, by IHSA rules when one team has a 30-point lead, starting a running clock for the rest of the game.

"My teammates always support each other," said Fahy about the Hawks' defensive effort. "You could hear everyone on the bench, cheering and going crazy, and that helps tremendously."

Pape led all scorers with 19 points, while Fahy finished with 15. Kate Rule led Libertyville with 6 points.

Victoria Bulatovic came off the bench in the fourth to score 3 points for Maine South, while Emily Dillon did the same for Libertyville.

Fahy also led the way on the boards for the home team with 8 rebounds.

"We know Libertyville is a very good basketball team, and sometimes it's not your night - but it was our night," said Hamann. "It is a tribute to the way our kids played. They were ready to roll and they were excited.

"Libertyville is going to go very deep in the postseason, so we're very proud of the win tonight."
