Kaneland seniors go out with a win

Morris wanted to derail Kaneland's senior night.

The Knights had other ideas.

Kaneland came away with a 66-44 win in Maple Park Friday in the Interstate Eight Conference final.

"We wanted to spoil their senior night. That was our goal. I don't think we did," said Morris junior guard Colin Cummings.

Kaneland (16-13, 9-5), meanwhile, wanted a turnaround from the teams' last game. The Knights lost to Morris (13-17, 4-10) earlier in the season 30-29.

"We wanted to turn around from that time we played them. It was a bad game. We wanted to get every senior a basket and get a win," Kaneland senior Brett David said.

The Knights finished third in the Interstate Eight.

"I'm really happy for the seniors," Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. "It's a nice way to end their run at home. They wanted to go out winners at home."

Kaneland got on the board first, but two 3-pointers by Jack Walker and Cummings pushed Morris ahead 8-2. A quick recovery by the Knights put them up 12-8 with about three minutes on the clock and they led 16-10 after one quarter.

Morris knew it would have to control the pace again in this second matchup. Kaneland plays a very-fast paced game. Morris tried to slow their pace in the first half. The Knights only scored 9 points while Morris got 15 in the second quarter.

Kaneland led at half 35-25.

"Our first half we had a game plan," Cumming said. "We knew they were going to pressure. The second half got away from us. We decided to scrap man. We came in here thinking we were just going to play zone. The game just got progressively worse."
