No letdown for Stevenson in win over Prospect

Stevenson's boys basketball team showed no letdown Saturday at the 2020 Camp Horseshoe Shootout at Lake Park in Roselle.

Stevenson, which had an emotional win over conference-rival Mundelein on Friday, jumped out to an early lead and then turned on the jets in a 60-40 win over Prospect.

"It's not easy," Stevenson coach Pat Ambrose said. "Especially in an afternoon game on the road against an opponent we don't normally see. We did a nice job. We didn't box out well enough, but we played well. It's February and this is the time to play well."

Stevenson (21-4), which could earn the top seed in the Prospect sectional, got off to a fast start thanks to the play of John Ittounas. The senior scored 10 of his 14 points in the first quarter as the Patriots jumped out to 19-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

"It was tough playing a good conference opponent like Mundelein and then coming back the next day," Ittounas said. "But they had a tough game last night as well. We came in mentally focused and prepared. We just kept going."

Prospect (12-14), which suffered a tough loss to Buffalo Grove on Friday, stayed close. The Knights got it to 37-29 with 2:58 when Stevenson exploded.

Robert Holmes, who finished with 11 points, had a huge dunk and Ittounas followed with a coast-to-coast driving layup to spark a 13-2 run to put the game away.

"Our kids always will fight," Prospect coach John Camardella said. "We were outmatched at quite a few positions. But we continued to work."

Matt Ambrose had a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 13 points for the Patriots. Matthew Kaznikov had 9 points and Evan Ambrose had a pair of 3-pointers to finish with 6 points.

Prospect was led by Matt Woloch, who had 10 points, Owen Schneider, who had 9 points and Brian Dini and Chase Larsen, who each had 7 points.
