Waubonsie Valley's Schwieger first MVP of 2020
Ben Schwieger of Waubonsie Valley is this week's Daily Herald boys basketball MVP.
Ben Schwieger, Waubonsie Valley: Named all-tournament in a championship run at Jacobs, the 6-foot-5 junior began 2020 just as strong. Schwieger averaged 18.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3 assists and shot 75 percent from the floor at Jacobs. He then totaled 39 points in wins over East Moline United and Marian Catholic.
Julian Campbell, Palatine: The Pirates' 6-foot-7 junior helped his team win the consolation title at the Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament, where in five games he averaged 19.4 ppg, and 9.2 rpg, including leading the tournament with 19 offensive rebounds. Named to the all-tournament team, Campbell also shot 65 percent from 2-point range and added four 3-pointers.
Scottie Ebube, Mundelein: The Mustangs needed a big-time effort in the highly regarded Collinsville tournament to advance to the championship game. They got it, in large part, thanks to their big man. The 6-foot-8 junior center averaged 16.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.3 blocks, as the Mustangs went 3-1 in the tourney, improving to 13-0 before losing to undefeated Collinsville 63-48 in the final.
Nick Erickson, Hampshire: This 6-foot-7 senior forward maintained his high level of play in a 55-40 nonconference victory over Palatine (8-6). A central figure in the Whip-Purs' holiday tournament victory at Marengo, Erickson scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Hampshire (11-3) to its 11th straight victory.
