Carmel rallies for 3A victory

Carmel Catholic's boys basketball team trailed by 18 points at halftime of its state tournament opener Tuesday night.

The Corsairs never quit, however, rallying to beat No. 13 CICS/Northtown 85-81 in overtime and avoid an upset.

No. 4 Carmel (13-16) advances to its own Class 3A regional final at 7 p.m. Friday against the winner of Wednesday night's game between No. 5 Alcott Coop and No. 12 Antioch.

Grant 60, Cary-Grove 45: At Lake Zurich, the fifth-seeded Bulldogs earned their 20th win of the season in the Class 4A regional semifinal.

Grant (20-8) will play No. 4 Lake Zurich in Friday's 7 p.m. final.

St. Viator 70, Vernon Hills 42: At Payton, the third-seeded Lions advanced to Friday's Class 3A regional final.

No. 14 Vernon Hills ended its season with a 5-26 record.

Notre Dame 62, Glenbrook North 56: At Libertyville, the second-seeded Dons survived a scare in the Class 4A semifinal against the No. 18 seed.

Malik Jenkins and Matt Stritzel each scored 13 points for Notre Dame, which advances to Friday's 7 p.m. final against No. 7 Niles North.
