Stevenson seniors Alex Elzinga and Kari Moffat have played varsity basketball together for four years.

They figure to see a lot more of each other on the court in the future, too.

Elzinga has accepted an appointment from West Point in New York and will play basketball for Army, while Moffat has verbally committed to Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

Both Division I basketball programs compete in the Patriot League.

Stevenson coach Tom Dineen said the commitments are a “big relief” for his two Patriots. They made their respective decisions Wednesday, then went out and helped the Patriots beat Palatine in the Class 4A Wheeling regional final. It marked Stevenson’s fourth straight 20-win season.

“Trust me, they both played real well on Thursday,” Dineen said with a laugh.

The 5-foot-5 Moffat has been Dineen’s starting point guard all four of his years at Stevenson. The 6-foot Elzinga has started the last couple of seasons.

“I’m real happy for them and their families,” Dineen said. “They’re great kids, and they deserve something like this. They’ve devoted an awful lot of time to basketball.”
