Grayslake Norths girls basketball team survived a scare in its state tournament opener Tuesday night, rallying to edge No. 11 Highland Park 49-47 in a Class 4A regional semifinal at Grayslake North.
Brittney Thibeaux scored 16 points, Joanna Guhl chipped in 13 and Kendall Detweiler added 11 for the sixth-seeded Knights, who trailed 19-10 after one quarter and 26-20 at halftime. Detweilers second 3-pointer of the game and 5 points from Thibeaux helped Grayslake North outscore Highland Park 16-10 in the third quarter to knot the score at 36-36. Guhl then scored 7 points in the fourth, and the Knights escaped with the win.
Highland Parks Lena Munzer led all scorers with 27 points.
Grayslake North (26-3) will play No. 3 Zion-Benton (18-7), a 64-43 winner over No. 14 Hoffman Estates, in Thursdays 7:30 p.m. regional final.
Grayslake Central 43, Elmwood Park 20: At Chicago Northside, the fourth-seeded Rams captured their Class 3A state tournament opener, while eliminating the No. 13 seed.
Grayslake Central (19-10) advanced to Fridays 7:30 p.m. regional final.
Antioch 76, CICS/Northtown 28: At Chicago Northside, the fifth-seeded Sequoits won their Class 3A state playoff opener, ousting the 12th seed.
Megan Borries started the contest hitting two quick 3-pointers and a deuce to give the Sequoits a lead they would never relinquish. She wound up scoring 18 of her points in the first quarter and nabbing 3 steals in the process.
Because of the substantial lead the Sequoits developed, the second-string players saw ample minutes in the second half, earning what coach Tim Borries called a true team victory. Amanda Cleven and Kristen Kelly came off the bench to score a season-high 10 and 8 points, respectively. Tiffany Gantz and Abby Augustin came off the bench to earn team-high rebounding honors with 7 apiece.
For the fifth year in a row, Antioch (17-11) will head to the regional final. The Sequoits will play Grayslake Central at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Regina Dominican 63, Wauconda 35: At Ridgewood, the 14th-seeded Bulldogs dropped the Class 3A regional semifinal.
Wauconda finished 6-22.
