Basketball Focus
Elk Groves girls basketball team remained 1 game behind Rolling Meadows in the Mid-Suburban East as the Grenadiers recorded a 56-42 victory over visiting Wheeling on Friday.
Top scorers for the Grens (8-5, 3-1) were junior Melissa Solorio (22 points) and senior Diamond Boyd (19).
Solorio had a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter and senior Kelly Naughton had one as the hosts led 18-9 gong into the second quarter.
Wheeling (4-10, 1-3) was led by sophomore guard Deanna Kuzmanic, who tossed home 21 points, including 4 3-pointers.
Hersey 39, Buffalo Grove 36: Ashley Raulli scored 10 points and teammates Meg Cerniglia and Casey Weyhrich each added 8 as host Hersey improved to 7-5 and 2-2 in the MSL East.
Hersey junior Renee Poulos 2 free throws with eight second left decided the final margin.
Erica Hill led the Huskies with 8 rebounds followed by Cerniglia (7) and Raulli (6).
We didnt shoot very well, said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. But we made up for it by being really tough on the offensive boards.
BG (3-8, 1-3) was led by Kimberly Herzog (9 points) and Bailey North (8).
Schaumburg 64, Conant 49: Riley Williams (18 points), Amanda Kelly (17) and Jada Blackwell (14) led the visiting Saxons to the MSL West victory.
Carly Brossard led Schaumburg with 8 rebounds while Jasmine Bethea had 7 and Blackwell 6.
Kelly had 6 assists and Williams 5 as the Saxons improved to 6-7 and 1-3.
Katie Lomas (11 points) and Sarah Mazurek (10) paced the Cougars (3-9, 0-4).
Maine West 37, Glenbrook North 30: Maine West improved to 5-8 and 3-2 in the CSL North as junior forward Brittany Collins led the Warriors with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks.
She made 8-of-9 free throws for West which received 3-pointers from Erin Ross and Taylor Iaculla.
