Barrington survived a defensive struggle Thursday night at Schaumburg to pull out a 46-43 Mid-Suburban League West win in boys basketball.
Senior guard Brad Zaumseil scored 8 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Broncos (4-4, 2-0) held off numerous late charges by the Saxons (4-3, 1-1).
Zaumseil also pulled down 6 rebounds and dished out 7 assists.
Brads a marked man this year, said Barrington coach Bryan Tucker. He does what he has to do on the floor to help us win. Hes a two-year all-conference player. Last year he scored the winning basket on a layup when we won here last year.
Zaumseil put the Broncos ahead 4-3 with 2:30 left in a tight defensive first quarter, and the Broncos never trailed. They built a 22-12 halftime lead when Zach Bart (6 points) took passes from Austin Madrzyk (6 points) and Zaumseil to score the last 4 points of the second quarter.
The Saxons played inspired defense in the third quarter to close the gap to 26-25 with :27 left in the quarter.
Barringtons Raymond Tolentino (6 points) was fouled at the buzzer on a 3-point attempt and made all 3 foul shots for a 29-25 lead.
Zaumseil hit for a 3-pointer to give Barrington a 32-25 lead with 7:32 remaining.
Schaumburgs Kyle Bolger (18 points, 6 rebounds), who played a stellar game, tightened it up at 36-35 on 2 free throws with 3:43 left.
Madrzyk hit a 3-pointer and Zaumseil a free throw to put the Broncos lead at 40-35. Schaumburg closed to 43-41, and 45-43 with :05 left before Tolentino hit for a final Broncos free throw. Barrington made 7 of 12 foul shots down the stretch.
We had to pressure them to win, said Zaumseil. They pressured us right back. We had some lapses at times but we pulled it out. Our guys did a great job being patient and setting good screens.
We had a rough third quarter when they came back at us, said Tucker. We played better in the fourth quarter and did enough to win.
Robby Vollman (3 points, 6 rebounds) deserves alot of credit for us. He defended (Jimmy) Lundquist and help keep him scoreless. Hes just 6-2 and did a great job.
Robby did a great job of holding Lundquist down, said Zaumseil. That was huge.
Ryan Kase backed up Bolger with 10 points and Cole Reyes had 7 points for Schaumburg.
Barrington played extremely well, said Saxons coach Matt Walsh. Their offense executed and was a key for the game. They reversed the ball and got quality shots. Defensively, we were on our heels.
