The Streamwood girls basketball team let Hampshire stick around Wednesday night. It nearly cost the Sabres.

Streamwood led by 15 points with 2½ minutes remaining in the second quarter, but failed to maintain the lead. The Whip-Purs rallied to tie the game before the Sabres ran away in the fourth quarter for a 55-42 victory over host Hampshire in Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament play.

“We could have put the game away,” Sabres coach George Rosner said. “We let the lead just go. We didn’t take care of the ball real well. We let them back in the game.”

A 3-pointer from Holly Foret followed by a layup from Jessica Cerda gave the Sabres (4-1) at 29-14 lead with 2:38 remaining in the first half. But the Whip-Purs (0-5) went on an 11-0 run to finish the half.

Sara Finn started the run with a 3-pointer. Jen Dumoulin’s basket with 4 seconds left cut Streamwood’s lead to 29-25 at halftime. Lizzy Panzica’s offensive rebound and putback with 6:53 remaining in the third quarter got Hampshire within 2, 29-27. The Whip-Purs tied the game at 37-37 with 46 seconds remaining in the third on another Finn 3-pointer.

“The kids were hitting shots,” Hampshire coach Ed Haugens said. “I felt a lot of positive energy from the kids. This is a game that could have gone either way. We just got the wind knocked out of us in the end.”

Deja Moore gave the Sabres the lead again, 39-37, with 8 seconds left in the third. The Sabres then scored the first 6 points of the fourth, 2 baskets from Cerda and one from Hannah McGlone, to increase their lead to 45-37.

“We have to cut down on turnovers. That was the biggest thing,” said McGlone about failing to hold the big lead. “We were doing the stupid passes again. Once we cut those down (we were good).”

The Whip-Purs wouldn’t get any closer than 5.

McGlone finished with 11 points and 17 rebounds. Moore had 19 points and Cerda added 15.

Finn led Hampshire with 15 points. Emma Benoit had 9 points and 6 rebounds. Lizzy Panzica added 7 points and 12 rebounds. Tricia Dumoulin also had 7 points for Hampshire.

Hononegah 45, Crystal Lake South 32: The Gators trailed 20-18 at halftime, but the Indians went on a 13-4 run to open the second half to take an 11-point lead, 33-22, 5 minutes into the third quarter.

CL South (2-3) trailed by double figures the rest of the game.

“We had some easy looks. We turned the ball a bunch in the second half,” Gators coach Kyle McCaughn said. “A lot of times we turned the ball over at half court, easy transition baskets for them. You can’t make anything easy for them”

The Gators turned the. ball over 10 times in the third quarter.

Sara Mickow scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Gators. Chanel Fanter added 6 points off the bench. CL South held the Indians to 28 percent shooting (14-of-50), but shot 31 percent (10-of-32) itself.
