Fremd made quick work of Chicago Hubbard with a 69-33 decision in the Chuck Mitchell 27th annual tournament at Fenton on Tuesday night.
The Vikings (2-0) in pool play were never headed by taking advantage of their height advantage in the opening minutes.
Sean Benka (15 point), junior Ben Carlson (10 points, 7 rebounds) and Tom Cordell all had putback baskets in the first quarter to open a 21-4 lead over the 0-2 Greyhounds.
We got the ball inside early and it got us off to a good start, said Fremd coach Bob Widlowski. We got a little sloppy in the second quarter but in the third quarter we came out strong.
Our inside players played well. Kevin Kubis and Michael Krupa played well. Theyre stepping into new roles.
Fremd led at the break 37-14 and 50-23 after three quarters.
Hubbard turned the ball over 27 times to Fremds 10. The Vikings outrebounded the Greyhounds 26-13. Fremd also had 16 assists in the game.
Riley Glassman hit double figures with 11. Hubbards Cardell Simmons also had 11.
Were learning our spots and knowing where the ball is supposed to go, said Benka. We really love sharing the ball. On offense, we want everyone to score. We pride ourselves with our defense. Defense is the focus. Tonight we just tried to pack it in.
Were still trying to find ourselves, said Widlowski. After this tournament well be able to identify those roles more clearly.
Elk Grove dropped another tough decision to Proviso West, losing 76-67 and falling to 0-2.
Trailing 55-46 after three quarters Elk Grove rallied to pull to within 70-67 on Austin Amanns 3-point basket with 1:35 left.
Two free throws by the Panthers Allante Welch (20 points) and a basket by Taylor Watkins following Dominick Robys steal with 1:01left sealed Elk Groves fate . Antoine French made 2 more free throws for Proviso West (2-0) with :41 left.
Amann played a stellar game, scoring 32 points and connecting on four 3-point baskets. Kishan Patel netted 19 points and Joell Melendez 12 for Elk Grove. The Grenadiers hit six 3-pointers.
