Basketball Focus
It was a third quarter to remember for Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro while first-year Jacobs coach Joe Benoit would like to forget it happened.
Holding an 8-point, 25-17 halftime lead, Barrington broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Eagles 24-4 to lead by 49-21 after 24 minutes.
The result was the Fillies cruising to a 57-41 win over the Golden Eagles in nonconference girls basketball action in Barrington Tuesday night. It was the season opener for both teams.
We are a young team and showed a lot of nerves in the first quarter and didnt execute very well, said Barreiro. We played a little better in the second quarter and played very well in the third quarter. Our goal at halftime was to get the ball inside in the third quarter and get easy shots. We were effective and steady in the third quarter both offensively and defensively.
Barrington, which made 9-of-15 shots from the field in the quarter for 60 percent, seized control of the game by scoring the first 16 points of the second half. With Aoife Callanan (2 3-pointers) and Angie Kirchoff scoring 6 points apiece, the Fillies opened up a 24-point lead at 41-17 with 2:48 remaining in the quarter.Jacobs finally broke the scoring drought on a 12-footer in the lane by Kelly Grady to make the score 41-19.
To Barringtons credit they made some adjustments at halftime and really played well in the third quarter, said Benoit. They proved how good a team they are and how well-coached they are.
Despite being down by 28 after 3 quarters, Jacobs didnt quit. On a 3-pointer by Tiffany Frighetto, the Golden Eagles got to within 12 of Barrington, 53-41, with 1:12 left but couldnt get any closer.
The kids didnt quit and I am proud of their effort, said Benoit. There were some first-night jitters but we will learn from this and get back in the gym tomorrow and get better. We are a work in progress.
Payton Berg was the lone Golden Eagle in double digits with 11 points, which included 3 3-pointers. Frighetto scored 8 points in a reserve role for the Golden Eagles in the fourth quarter alone which included a pair of baskets beyond the arc.
Kirchoff led Barrington with 12 points and 9 rebounds while Callanan scored 11 with 3 3s.
