Hampshire battles past improving Jacobs

Hampshire girls basketball coach Eric Samuelson showed his displeasure at halftime Wednesday despite his team holding a 15-10 advantage over Jacobs.

The Whip-Purs heeded Samuelson's words of wisdom outscoring Jacobs 23-17 in the second half and 12-5 to end the game in posting a 38-27 win in Fox Valley Conference action in Hampshire Wednesday night.

"I gave our team some guff at halftime," said the Hampshire coach. "I didn't think our play was acceptable and I really challenged them intentionally. They responded and played better at both ends. Jacobs is much better than last year and are a diamond in the rough in the conference."

On a 12-footer from Liz Schwartz, Jacobs climbed to within 26-22 with 6 minutes. The Whip-Purs (4-3, 2-0) went on a 7-0 run courtesy of 7 points from Kelby Bannerman to take a 33-22 advantage with 3:46 left.

Bannerman registered a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Alyssa Cork scored 8 with a pair of treys in the first half.

"I was getting some open shots and was able to hit some shots to help the team," said Cork. "I think we came together as a team tonight and got a big win."

Samuelson was impressed with Cork's effort.

"She had open looks from 3 all night and was able to hit a couple rainbows from the corner," said Samuelson. "She had a couple shots that went in and out. She didn't play much as a junior but she should be a contributor this season."

Katelyn Del Re equaled Cork with 8 points.

Sophomore McKenzie Leahy paced the Eagles (3-5, 1-2) with 12 points and 6 rebounds.

"McKenzie is still learning to fight through adversity," said Jacobs coach Jon Reibel. "We have nine seniors who haven't won a lot and are making the commitment with great effort to finish their careers on a winning note."
