Barrington holds off Elk Grove

Freshman Sophia Swanson connected for a career-high 22 points and sophomore Laura Mahlum added 15 as Barrington's girls basketball team posted a 52-42 triumph over host Elk Grove in Tuesday's Mid-Suburban League crossover.

"It was a nice team win and that is what these kids are capable of when they play smart," said Filles coach Babbi Barreiro, whose 3-4 team won its third straight game. "They did an excellent job sharing the ball and I felt like Taylor (Thompson) led the way on that."

Thompson had 11 rebounds, 11 assists and 4 blocked shots.

"Taylor sees the floor well and she was able to pass the ball when getting double-teamed," Barreiro said. "She and Mahlum worked well together in the post."

Barrington used a 19-2 run to take command in the third quarter.

"Sophia and Laura really stepped up offensively which was great for the team," Barreiro said. "Elk Grove is well coached (Jen Buxton) and they have a lot of scorers. I thought Gracie Stagnito did an excellent job limiting Megan Murray's (6 points) chances for them. She (Murray) is so talented but I thought Gracie gave her a good game."

Lili Duckmann led EG (4-2) with 16 points while Alyssa Trausch added 14.

Buffalo Grove 56, Hoffman Estates 28: Kendra Lee (14 points) Alyssa Ramos (11) and Macy Floro (9) paced visiting Buffalo Grove (4-3) in the MSL crossover.

Hoffman Estates (1-5) was led by Ashley Oliver (10 points) and Chiara Hurd (9).

Fremd 79, Wheeling 30: Grace LaBarge (15 points), Ruthie Montella (13), Olivia Hill (10) and Emily Klaczek (10) led host Fremd (4-0) in the MSL crossover.

Chloe Drozdz (11 points) was the top scorer for Wheeling (1-5).

Hersey 67, Palatine 36: Hersey raised its record to 5-2 as Mary McGrath (17 points), Mary Kate Fahey (15), Katy Eidle (14) and Jordan Carlquist (8) led the visiting Huskies in the MSL crossover.

Palatine (3-3) was paced by Madi Stark (15 points).

Maine West 59, Vernon Hills 31: Angela Dugalic scored 26 points (20 in the first half) with 8 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocks as Maine West (7-0) won its CSL North opener.

Brianna Hernandez (11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals), Dylan VanFleet (7 points, 6 assists, 4 steals) and Melissa Gomez (7 points, 3 steals, 3 rebounds off the bench) were other key performers for the Warriors.

Christian Liberty 64, Alden-Hebron 32: Host Christian Liberty got a game-high 24 points from Julia Wolke and 13 from Megan Ng to raise its record to 2-3. Melissa Castro added 11 points for the Chargers.
