Smith steps down at Burlington Central

Burlington Central girls basketball coach Mark Smith announced after Thursday's season-ending loss to Glenbard South in the Class 3A Plano regional championship game that he is retiring as the school's coach.

Smith and his wife are moving to California where his wife has accepted a job in the San Francisco area and two of their three children live.

Smith, who coached boys basketball at St. Charles North before taking over the Burlington Central girls in the 2012-13 season, led the Rockets to a 27-5 record in his first year.

The next season Burlington Central finished fourth at the 2014 Class 3A state tournament with a 27-6 record. The Rockets followed with a 25-4 record in 2015 and won another regional title in 2016.

Next year's Rockets will return all five starters from this year's 22-8 team in their first season in the Fox Valley Conference.
