Durkin, Tims stand out in Hinsdale South victory vs. Addison Trail

Even on Senior Night, it's tough not to notice Hinsdale South's future.

Juniors Billy Durkin and Aaron Tims - the lone returning starters from last season's team - powered the Hornets to Friday's 65-46 West Suburban Gold boys basketball victory over Addison Trail in Darien.

Durkin was surrounded by four seniors in the starting lineup but quickly emerged by scoring double digits with Tims in the first half. After Addison Trail scored the game's first 4 points, Hinsdale South scored 18 straight and 31 of the next 34 points.

One of Durkin's four 3-pointers lifted Hinsdale South (13-14, 4-8) to its biggest lead of 34-9 late in the second quarter, a lead that was comfortably at 34-12 by halftime.

"Sometimes we get off a little slow and have to work our way into the game," said Durkin, who scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the first half. "After they got off to that 4-point lead, we just kind of settled down and got our heads into the game. We started getting some stops and our offense was working well."

Forced to press virtually the entire second half, Addison Trail (12-15, 1-11) chopped into the deficit through the third quarter and the start of the fourth. But even after a pretty good run, the Blazers only pulled to within 46-34 on an Adem Mehmeti 3-pointer at the start of the fourth quarter.

"Even when we scored the first 4 points you could see we had no energy," said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons. "We were sleepwalking out there. That was just a bad half of basketball. I'm glad we came out with some fight in the second half, but you can't go down like we did and expect to have a chance."

Mehmeti scored 14 points for Addison Trail while Sheldon Allgood scored 13. Tims had 12 points and 9 rebounds. Hornets seniors Lukas Rainys and Patrick Savage each scored 9 points.

"The seniors brought really good energy tonight when we got off to that start," said Hornets coach Brett Moore. "I was impressed by our guys tonight."
