Stanfel's 21 points lift Grayslake North past Grant

Margaret Stanfel scored a season-high 21 points, Savannah Guenther had a double-double, and Grayslake North's girls basketball team upset Grant 39-29 in a play-in game of the Class 4A Hersey regional in Arlington Heights on Monday night.

It was the fourth meeting this season between the two Northern Lake County Conference opponents. Each team won twice.

No. 19 Grayslake North (10-21) advances to Tuesday's 6 p.m. semifinal against No. 4 Hersey.

Jazzlyn Linbo had 8 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots for No. 13 Grant, which finished 16-13.

Stanfel went 5 of 11 from three-point range and also grabbed 6 rebounds. Guenther had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jayden Curtis hustled for 12 boards for the Knights.

Stranfel's second 3-pointer of the game with 3 seconds left in the first half gave Grayslake North a 12-11 lead. She then hit two more 3s in the third quarter, as the Knights took a 20-18 advantage into the fourth.

A 3-pointer by MaCalyn Flores (7 points) got Grant within 27-24 with 3:30 left. But Guenther answered with a baseline jumper, and the Bulldogs never got any closer. Guenther scored 9 points, including her second 3-pointer, in the fourth.

Round Lake 46, Deerfield 33: At Hersey, the 12th-seeded Panthers bolted to a 16-1 lead in the first four minutes of the Class 4A regional play-in, then watched the No. 21 seed pull within seven points in the fourth quarter, before pulling away.

Diane Flade scored a game-high 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Taylor Major had a double-double for Round Lake (21-9), which will play No. 5 Stevenson in Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. regional semifinal.

Major had 12 points (all in the first quarter), grabbed 14 rebounds and also had 3 steals. Fellow freshman Amari Cole had 9 points and 9 rebounds for the Panthers, and Sam Nicoline contributed 8 points and 6 boards.

Deerfield (5-26) was led by Demi Friedman's 9 points and 8 rebounds.

Highland Park 64, Palatine 47: At Vernon Hills, Addie Budnik scored 30 points in the Class 4A regional play-in, surpassing 1,000 for her career, as the 14th-seeded Giants dispatched the 18th-seeded Pirates.

Highland Park will play No. 3 Libertyville in Tuesday's 6 p.m. semifinal.

Vernon Hills 58, Waukegan 43: At Vernon Hills, the 11th-seeded seeded and host Cougars won the Class 4A regional play-in.

Vernon Hills (15-12) will play No. 6 Zion-Benton in Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. semifinal.

Warren 47, Wheeling 40: At the 17th-seeded Blue Devils earned their 10th win of the season in the Class 4A regional play-in.

Warren will play No. 2 Lake Forest in Tuesday's 6 p.m. semifinal, followed by No. 7 Buffalo Grove vs. No. 10 Lake Zurich at 7:30 p.m.
