Huber pours in 35 points in Glenbard East's OT victory

How did Glenbard East come from behind to defeat Glenbard North at the District 87 Rachel Bach Memorial Tournament Wednesday morning?

The answer is in Lauren Huber's stats.

Huber scored a personal-best 35 points and grabbed 7 rebounds and 6 steals to show the Rams the way to a 57-48 overtime girls basketball victory. One of five sophomores to play for the Rams, Huber also blocked a shot.

"Feeling good going into conference games," Huber said. "Honestly I was not going for any personal goals. It just turned out like, we had a couple of good backdoor cuts, some good passes. Towards the end we set up some 3-point plays, but other players shined through. Brooke Hernandez had a great layup to tie us up to get us into overtime, so that was clutch."

Huber, a 5-foot-9 guard, had help, but she also stood out.

"She was pivotal," Rams coach Nicole Miller said, noting Huber's game point total is more than any player she's ever coached.

The Rams (1-3) trailed by 11 in the third quarter but rallied to tie the game at 32 on a Huber lay-in.

"I told them we needed to tie it by the end of the third quarter and we did," Miller said. "I was proud of them."

"If anything it just motivated us more," Huber said of the double-digit deficit, "but we needed to find a balance between picking up the pace but to a place that we could still stay composed, to where we could pick up those points slowly. We got on streaks, but it wasn't just rushed and chaotic."

The Panthers led by 4 with 1:19 left in the fourth quarter on a Brea King basket, but Huber converted a pair of free throws and Hernandez, another sophomore, stole the ball and scored on a layup to send the game to overtime.

The Panthers (0-4) took the lead again in overtime on an Akira Lebron free throw with 3:28 to play, but the Rams ruled the remainder of the game. Huber gave them the lead for good with a pair of baskets. She scored 8 of the Rams' 10 overtime points.

"We lost a couple of players because they fouled out, but we had a great bench ready to come in and they filled in great," Huber said.

Brea King led the Panthers with 17 points, and Nevaeh King added 11. Chassidi Betney added a dozen rebounds.
