Antioch goes 3-0 in Hoops for Healing
Dan Filippone scored 26 points, including three 3-pointers, and Antioch's boys basketball team defeated Marian Central 66-50 at Woodstock on Wednesday night in final-round action of the Hoops for 19th annual Healing tournament.
Gavin Eldridge added 16 points and 6 rebounds for the Sequoits, who finished 3-0 in the tournament co-hosted by Woodstock and Woodstock North for the second year in a row.
Filippone, who hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left to beat Woodstock North 60-57 on Tuesday night, had 7 points in second quarter. The senior guard then scored 12 more in the third in helping the Sequoits stretch their lead to 55-36 entering the fourth.
Jack Gillespie had 9 points for Antioch. Ben Nauman, one of several football players on the roster, came off the bench and hustled down 7 rebounds.
"We played our best game in our first game," coach Jim White said of the Sequoits' 69-65 win over Woodstock on Monday night. "We're 3-0 but I don't feel great yet. I just want us to clean up. Our football guys have had three practices."
Woodstock North 63, Round Lake 54: At Woodstock, vying for the second victory in three days after not winning a game last season, the Panthers saw their fourth-quarter rally fall short in their finale of the 19th annual Hoops for Healing tournament.
Round Lake (1-2, 1-2 tourney) trailed 50-40 after three quarters and was still down 10 with less than five minutes left. But 6-foot-3 sophomore Hakim Williams stretched for a layup, put back an offensive board and sank a free throw to get the Panthers within 56-51 with 3:02 to go.
Round Lake couldn't get any closer, however. Woodstock North senior Zach White sank 4 free throws in a row in the final 64 seconds. Sophomore Cole Brey led the Thunder with 15 points, Matthew Fallaw had 14, and White finished with 11.
Williams scored a game-high 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed 4 rebounds. The Panthers' other contributors included Musiq Brantley (9 points, three 3-pointers), Elyija Jones (7 points, 8 rebounds) and Jeremiah Jordan (4 points, 8 rebounds).
