Caudle's double-double leads Vernon Hills past Elk Grove

Kayla Caudle had a double-double, Piper Bedell and Daniella Jarrell nearly had one as well, and Vernon Hills' girls basketball team beat Elk Grove 43-28 to improve to 2-0 in its Cougar Classic on Wednesday night.

Caudle, who is expected to sign a letter of intent with DePaul University this week, had 10 points, 15 rebounds and 4 steals. Bedell added 11 points and 9 rebounds, and Jarrell had 9 points and 9 rebounds.

"We did not shoot the ball well, but it was nice to see us stay ahead with good defense," Vernon Hills coach Paul Brettner said. "Elk Grove is a nice team with quality guard play and a very good veteran post. It was a nice win for us."

The tournament resumes Saturday. Vernon Hills will play Antioch (0-2) at 11:30 a.m.

Sycamore 47, Antioch 36: At Vernon Hills, Nayla Loos scored 11 points in her season debut, but the Sequoits fell to 0-2 in the tournament and 0-2 on the season.

Antioch coach Tim Borries said his young team "is still experiencing some growing pains." Faith Miller grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds for the Sequoits, and Piper Foote had 4 steals.

Antioch plays host Vernon Hills at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Grant 48, Mundelein 37: At Mundelein, Brooke Karpinske scored 16 points to lead three Bulldogs in double figures.

Jazzlyn Linbo and Ally Mahinay added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Grant (2-1, 2-1 tourney).

Morgan Frank led Mundelein (1-2, 1-2) with 21 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. She sank 10 of 14 free throws. Gerda Boreika had 8 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs.

Mundelein led 22-21 at halftime but got outscored 9-4 in the third quarter and 18-11 in the fourth.

Round Lake 36, Metea Valley 29: On Tuesday night, freshman guard Taylor Major scored 13 points, including two 3-pointers, and Molly Hennig earned her first win as head coach, as the Panthers won their season opener as part of the Maine East tournament.

Senior guard Diane Flade added 7 points for Round Lake, which resumes the tournament Thursday with a 6 p.m. tipoff against host Maine East.
