Wheeling off to winning start

Wheeling's girls basketball team kicked off its season with a 51-37 win over Hampshire in the opening round of the Hoffman Estates tournament on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats, who raced ahead 13-5 after one quarter, were led by junior Morgan Collar (17 points), junior Sophia Stanke (14) and senior Nosa Igiehon (13). Stanke had a pair of 3-pointers while Collar had one.

Maine West 47, Downers Grove North 32: St. Louis-bound Rachel Kent collected 23 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals as the Warriors (2-0) won their first game at the Schaumburg tournament. Dylan VanFleet added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals while Angela Dugalic had 7 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

Hampshire 47, Hoffman Estates 39: Sophomore guard Anastasia Sturgis scored 16 points (five 3-pointers) to lead Hoffman Estates in the opening game of its own tournament. Patricia Wadas added 7 points and Berry Chukwuyem had 6 with a 3-pointer for the Hawks. Teammates Ashley Oliver and Alysa Dupart also had 3-pointers.

York 50, Conant 38: After trailing 35-20 at intermission, Conant outscored the host Dukes 18-16 in the second half of the second-round game of the York tournament. Junior Chikere Oduocha led Conant (0-2) with 9 points followed by Stephanie Mazurek (7), Neeha Kakuturu (6) and Abbey DiSalvo (6). Kakuturu, Mazurek, DiSalvo, Hannah Shulman and Julia Flaishaker each had a 3-pointers for the Cougars.
