Soukup, Gilbertson lead Lake Zurich to season-opening win

Freshman point guard Alayna Soukup scored 12 points in her high school debut, junior guard Ella Gilbertson added 11, and Lake Zurich's girls basketball team opened its season with a 40-30 win over host Johnsburg on Tuesday night.

The game was part of Lake Zurich's Turkey Thriller tournament.

Maddy Piggott and Margueret Spear had 8 and 7 points, respectively, for the Bears, who play at Rolling Meadows on Thursday.

Grayslake Central 47, Richmond-Burton 41: Kate Bullman scored 16 points, and the visiting Rams rallied in the fourth quarter to win their season opener.

Maura Fitzgerald added 12 points, and Kristina Heerdegen scored 5 of her 11 points in the fourth quarter for Grayslake Central. The Rams trailed at 29-27 at halftime and 37-35 after three, before outscoring the Rockets 12-4 in the final quarter.

Glenbrook South 60, Carmel 43: At Mundelein, senior forward Kristin Ralston had 13 points and 8 rebounds, senior guard Makayla Stadler added 12 points, 10 steals and 6 rebounds, and the Titans improved to 2-0 in the Thanksgiving tournament.

Senior guard Libby Vanderveen also scored 12 points for Glenbrook South, which led 12-10 after one quarter, 27-21 at halftime and 50-33 after three.

Carmel (1-1) got 11 points apiece from Shai Horton and Katie Lach (three 3-pointers). Corsairs freshman center Grace Sullivan grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 6 points.

Glenbrook South plays Highland Park (1-1) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Carmel faces Grayslake North (0-2) at 4:30 p.m.

Highland Park 41, Grant 36: At Mundelein, the Bulldogs' fourth-quarter rally fell short on Day 2 of the Thanksgiving tournament.

Addie Budnik scored 13 of her game-high 24 points, including three 3-pointers, in the third quarter, as Highland Park took a 37-22 lead into the fourth. A bucket by Ally Mahinay capped a 10-0 to get Grant within five, but Budnik's layup pushed the Giants' advantage back to seven, and Halle Abrams' short jumper made it 41-32.

Jazzlyn Linbo had 20 points for Grant (1-1). Mahinay scored 8 of her 12 points in the fourth.

Highland Park (1-1) also got 13 points (two 3-pointers) from Sydney Ignoffo.

Highland Park plays Glenbrook South at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Grant takes on Mundelein at 6 p.m.
