Grayslake Central clinches share of NLCC title

Kate Bullman scored a game-high 13 points, and Grayslake Central's girls basketball team clinched a share of the Northern Lake County Conference championship by beating host Antioch 42-30 on Saturday afternoon.

Grayslake Central (19-7, 11-0) has earned a share of the NLCC championship in each of the conference's three years of existence.

Rosie Drevline added 7 points for the Rams, while Maura Fitzgerald and Madeline Mussay each had six.

Piper Foote had 9 points and 3 steals to lead Antioch (4-20, 2-9), which led 6-5 after one quarter before getting outscored 19-5 in the second. Faith Miller grabbed 8 rebounds, and Hailey Webb continued to play strong defense, coach Tim Borries said, forcing a turnover and deflecting 5 passes.

Libertyville 75, Waukegan 33: Margaret Buchert scored all of her game-high 18 points in the first half, as the visiting Wildcats maintained their share of first place in the North Suburban Conference championship with one game left.

Maddie Spaulding and Marianna Morrissey added 10 points apiece for the Wildcats (19-7, 10-3), who also received 9 points from Abigail Frea.

Libertyville can clinch a share of the NSC championship by winning at home on Wednesday night against Mundelein. Lake Forest is 9-3 in conference with remaining games against Warren (Monday) and Zion-Benton (Thursday).

Round Lake 54, Wauconda 46: Freshman guard Taylor Major scored a season-high 24 points, and the host Panthers won again in Northern Lake County Conference action for their 10th win in a row.

Round Lake (19-8, 9-3) also received from 15 points Emily Etherington and 10 from Diane Flade. Major sank 8 field goals, including a 3-pointer, and went 7 of 13 from the foul line. The Panthers led 18-11 after one quarter and went into halftime up 23-19. They led 34-31 after three.

Ella Karg had a team-high 11 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for Wauconda (18-5, 7-4). Allie Tylka had a season-low 9 points and 10 rebounds, and Morgan Lung scored 9 points as well for the Bulldogs. Kiley Szmajda contributed 7 points and 10 rebounds.

"We came out flat in the first and were never able to recover," Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. "We trailed the whole game and didn't look like the confident team we should be. Our shots didn't fall and we didn't box out well. We gave up 16 points off offensive rebounds. We cut it to one in the fourth but couldn't come up with the stop when we needed it. (No.) 5 (Major) is a strong player and we didn't have an answer for her."

Round Lake's victory avenged a 71-46 loss at Wauconda on Dec. 13.

Grayslake North 54, North Chicago 43: Savannah Guenther scored 17 points, Morgan Atwell added a season-high 16, and the visiting Knights won in Northern Lake County Conference action.

Margaret Stanfel scored 12 points for Grayslake North (9-18, 5-6), which snapped a six-game losing streak.

Lakes 54, Grant 42: Down 37-36 after three quarters, the Eagles rallied for the Northern Lake County Conference win.

Lakes (11-15, 4-7) received balanced scoring. Mia Edwards had 13 points and 7 rebounds, Sara Smith collected 12 points and 5 rebounds, Taylor Lehman chipped in 10 points and 6 boards, and Brittany Washington scored 9 points. Washington made 6 of 6 free throws down the stretch.

"Good conference road win," Lakes coach Brian Phelan said. "Kylie (Jozwik) had a great defensive game tonight."

Grant fell to 13-10 and 6-4 in the NLCC.

Stevenson 72, Highland Park 43: Avery King matched her season high with 22 points, and the visiting Patriots won the nonconference game to hit the 20-win mark for the ninth time in 10 years.

Ava Bardic and Simone Sawyer added 15 points apiece for Stevenson (20-9), which bolted to a 20-11 lead after one quarter. King made three 3-pointers.

Warren 39, Vernon Hills 37: Jeanette Ezernack scored 9 points, Macy Kocen added eight, and the visiting Blue Devils followed up their upset of Zion-Benton on Friday night by beating the Cougars in nonconference action.

Warren (9-16) has won four of its last five.

Piper Bedell had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, for Vernon Hills (14-11). Kayla Caudle added 8 points and 11 rebounds, and Daniella Jarrell tallied 7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

"We could not score in the first half, but we came alive during the third quarter," said Vernon Hills coach Paul Brettner, whose Cougars trailed 22-10 at halftime but got within 33-30 after three. "We put ourselves in position to win, but we just couldn't knock down a shot at the end."

Lake Zurich 59, Palatine 30: The host Bears won the nonconference game to improve to 15-14.
