Dundee-Crown wins nail-biter over Cary-Grove

Dundee-Crown coach Lance Huber could finally breathe a little easier.

With the Chargers up by a point, a 3-pointer by Cary-Grove's Luc Bressett at the buzzer bounced off the rim and D-C survived with a 58-57 victory over the upset-minded Trojans in Fox Valley Conference action in Cary Tuesday night.

"We thought 20 (Beaumont Frericks) or 33 (Frank Jakubicek) would shoot it," said Huber. "They got a little better shot and look than we wanted them to have. Adam (McCloud) came up with a great play and we got a break and will take the win."

Cary-Grove coach Adam McCloud was happy with the play not the result.

"It was bam, bam sideline and we got a great look and great shot," said McCloud. "You couldn't ask for anything else in 4 seconds. The kids really played hard and we gave ourselves a chance to win."

D-C (12-11, 9-4) started fast connecting on 10-of-14 shots in the first quarter for 71 percent and led 22-17 after 8 minutes.

To begin the second quarter, Jack Orndahl canned a pair of 3-pointers to give the Chargers a 28-17 advantage with 6:35 left in the first half.

Cary-Grove (10-12, 6-6) whittled away at the D-C lead and took a 44-42 advantage on a putback by Addison West with 43 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Trojans extended their lead to 55-51 on a 12-footer on the baseline by Ben Ferrell with 1:26 left.

Enter D-C's Jordan Hairston to the rescue. In a matter of 22 seconds, Hairston scored on a layup and collected another basket off a steal to tie the game at 55 with 1:04 left in the contest.

"I knew there was no time to waste and I had to make something happen if we were going to win," said Hairston. "It was nice to come up with the win. It was a hard-fought game."

Despite only making 1-of-5 free throws in the final 30 seconds, Orndahl's free throw with 15 seconds remaining ended up being the game-winner.

"This is the first time in 4 years we have beaten Cary in Cary," said Orndahl. "It feels great. We made enough plays at the end to get the win. We set the tone early and that translated into a full 32 minute effort."

Orndahl, who scored 15 in the first half with 3 treys, ended up with 16 points. Gabe Bergeron (11 rebounds), who tallied 12 points in the second half, equaled Orndahl with 16 while Hairston added 11.

Beaumont Frericks and West (10 rebounds) led the Trojans with 11 points apiece while Frank Jakubicek, Ferrell and Sam Carhart added 9 each.
