Mayhorn sparks BG; Palatine handles Hoffman Estates

Caleb Mayhorn's big first quarter helped power host Buffalo Grove to a 77-44 victory over Hersey in Mid-Suburban East boys basketball on Friday.

Mayhorn canned four 3s in the first quarter and finished with seven of them on his way to a game-high 23 points.

Jack Vaselaney had a pair of 3s and 19 points for Buffalo Grove (13-9, 4-4), and Tom Trieb finished with 13 points.

Rocco Ronzio paced Hersey (7-14, 5-3) with 13 points and Tim Huff finished with 8.

"A great physical and mental effort tonight for 32 minutes," reported Buffalo Grove coach Keith Peterson. "Caleb Mayhorn really came out and set the tone with three 3s in the first four possessions."

Palatine 41, Hoffman Estates 29: The host Pirates came up with a strong defensive effort to stay in the thick of the Mid-Suburban West race.

Palatine allowed only single-digit scoring in each of the first quarters and still managed a scoring edge in the fourth quarter as senior guard Lamon Berry made 6 of 9 free throws on his way to a game-high 12 points.

Johnny O'Shea had 8 points and Cortez Hogans, Jake Moertl, Julian Campbell and David Balanganayi had 4 apiece for Palatine (15-10, 5-3), which is tied for second place in the West with Fremd; both are 1 game behind Barrington.

David Brendan Thompson paced Hoffman Estates (9-10, 2-6) with 7 points and Marquez Woodard finished with 6.

Wheeling 58, Elk Grove 33: On senior night for host Wheeling, a pair of seniors led the way.

Michael Best scored a game-high 19 points and D.J. Godlewski finished with 11, which included three 3s, to help Wheeling snap a seven-game losing streak.

Phil Bucko and Joe Jordan both contributed 8 points for the Wildcats (6-15, 2-6), who led by 11 at the half and pulled away by holding Elk Grove to 4 points in the third quarter.

Dylan Ingebrigtsen led the Grenadiers (2-20, 0-8) with 12 points and Shivam Amin had 8.

Maine West 68, Maine East 57: The Warriors stretched their win streak to four with a victory on the road in Central Suburban North play.

Maine West (14-6, 8-1), which defeated Maine East 58-39 in their first meeting this season, has a nonconference game Saturday at Rolling Meadows before getting back to CSL North play next Friday at Vernon Hills.

Proviso East 74, Leyden 47: The Eagles improved slipped to 10-11 overall with a West Suburban Gold loss to the visiting Pirates.

Grayslake North 77, Round Lake 57: The brothers Connolly were too much for host Round Lake in a Northern Lake County Conference matchup.

James Connolly finished with a team-high 23 points and Ryan Connolly had 21.

The Knights (8-13, 4-5) held the Panthers to 6 points in the first quarter.
