Kimbell's late 3-pointer lifts Wauconda

Wauconda, trailing by 2, got a late 3-pointer from Po Kimbell to earn a 56-55 victory over visiting Lakes on Saturday in Northern Lake County Conference girls basketball.

Kimbell finished with 17 points and five 3s, and Allie Tylka had what coach Jaime Dennis called her most well-rounded game of the season with 21 points and 17 rebounds.

Kiley Szmajda was another big contributor for Wauconda (10-10, 4-5) with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Dennis called a timeout with one minute left and drew up a play designed to draw attention toward Tylka and leave Kimbell open.

"I am really proud of their effort today and hope we continue to build on it," said Dennis. "We have hit some speed bumps here toward the end of the season and it was nice to see the girls pull this one off."

Lakes got three players to score in double figures. Sara Smith and Mia Edwards had 13 points apiece, and Brittany Washington finished with 11.

"We are asking the girls to step their game in the last quarter of the season, and we are moving in the right direction," Eagles coach Brian Phelan said. "I loved how much we sprinted on each and every possession tonight."

Libertyville 53, Deerfield 34: Libertyville's girls basketball team held visiting Deerfield scoreless in the third quarter in picking up a nonconference victory.

"We had a great third quarter and set the tone for the rest of the game," said Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen.

The Wildcats (11-10) scored 20 of their own in the third quarter.

Margaret Buchert made four 3s and finished with 16 points, and Lydia Crow canned a pair of 3s and her way to 15. Lauren Huber and Maddie Spalding finished with 8 apiece.

Grant 60, Antioch 47: The host Bulldogs got double-figure scoring from Jazz Linbo (17 points), Kennedy Kiesgen (13) and Ally Mahinay (12) in picking up a Northern Lake County Conference victory.

The victory kept Grant (15-7, 8-1) in a first-place tie with Grayslake Central in the NLCC.

Rachel Phillips led all scorers with 18 points, a career high, for Antioch (9-13, 4-5). She also had 10 rebounds, including 9 offensive boards, and 3 steals. The Sequoits' Piper Foote and Taylor Feltner combined for 19 points, and Foote had 4 assists.

Grayslake Central 52, Round Lake 22: Kate Bullman scored 13 of her game-high 15 points in the opening quarter, helping the visiting Rams bolt to a 22-0 lead in the Northern Lake County Conference matinee.

Kristina Heerdegen added a season-high 11 points for Grayslake Central (15-7, 8-1), which remains tied for first place with Grant in the NLCC. Rosie Drevline had 9 points in the win.

Round Lake (6-15, 2-7) was paced by Kiara Billups' 9 points.

Stevenson 70, Waukegan 34: Klaire Steffens helped the visiting Patriots salvage a weekend split in North Suburban Conference play by scoring a game-high 18 points.

Nikki Ware and Avery King finished with 11 points apiece for the Patriots (12-9, 7-2).

Grayslake North 52, North Chicago 21: Jordyn Gerdes led the host Knights with 14 points in the Northern Lake County Conference contest.

Ja'Kya Newbill added 9 points for Grayslake North (8-13, 5-4). Savannah Guenther and Brittany Grim each had seven.
