Prospect protects MSL East lead; Barrrington keeps pace in West

Prospect maintained a 2-game lead in the Mid-Suburban East boys basketball race by handling visiting Elk Grove 75-45 on Friday.

The Grens led 11-10 after the first quarter, but the Knights (13-4, 6-0) got plenty of separation by outscoring Elk Grove 22-6 in the second quarter.

David Swedura led Prospect's scoring effort with 18 points. Tim Lussenhopp shot 4-for-8 from 3-point range and finished with 15 points, and Sam Murray had 11.

The Knights finished with 11 three-pointers. Murray and 3, and Zachary Matters had 2.

Dylan Ingebrigtsen led the scoring for Elk Grove (2-17, 0-6) with 17 points and Sean Cherry had 11. The Grens shot 15-for-24 from 2-point range but 3-for-15 from beyond the arc.

Barrington 52, Schaumburg 37: The host Broncos maintained their share of first place in the MSL West by pulling away from the Saxons in the third quarter.

Barrington (13-4, 4-2) led by just 2 points at the half but outscored Schaumburg (7-13, 2-4) 19-5 in the third quarter.

Junior guard Jason Boock helped Barrington finish strong, scoring 9 of his game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter. Jake Parsons finished with 15 points and Anthony Spann had 14 for the Broncos.

Heze Trotter and Michael Hodges both finished with 11 points for Schaumburg.

Hersey 70, Wheeling 62: Rocco Ronzio scored 23 points and and Jacob Kluczewski added 15, including a crucial putback and 2 free throws down the stretch, to lead Hersey to an MSL East win at Wheeling.

Wheeling drew within 2 on a Phil Bucko 3-pointer but could get not closer against Hersey's junior-laden lineup.

"I know the points are there," with Ronzio, said Hersey coach Steve Messer. "He played great defense tonight, too."

Bucko drained four 3s and finished with a game-high 26 points and Michael Best had 22 with a pair of 3s for Wheeling (5-13, 1-5).

Matt Hanushewsky contributed 11 points for Hersey (6-13, 4-2).
