MLK Day setbacks for Grant at DeKalb

Mallory Harrity's 24 points weren't enough, as Grant's girls basketball team concluded play in DeKalb's Martin Luther King tournament with a 61-60 loss to Plainfield East on Monday.

Ally Mahinay added 14 points, including three 3-pointers, for Grant (13-7, 1-3 tourney), which took a 47-44 lead into the fourth quarter. Kennedy Kiesgen (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Bulldogs.

Bartlett 55, Grant 44: At DeKalb, in their first of two games on the day, the Bulldogs came up short.

Ally Mahinay and Mallory Harrity had 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Grant.

Lake Forest 61, Lakes 34: At the Lake Forest Martin Luther King tournament, the host Scouts bolted to an 18-6 lead after one quarter and led 37-12 at halftime.

Paule Ceneac led Lakes (10-13, 1-3 tournament) with 8 points, and Taylor Lehman had six.

Lake Forest won the tournament.

Lakes 39, Deerfield 33: At the Lake Forest Martin Luther King tournament, in their first game of the day, the Eagles got out to a 14-4 first-quarter lead and rode that momentum to the end.

"We started the game with great energy in the first quarter," Lakes coach Brian Phelan said. "And we finished with a strong fourth quarter."

Mia Edwards led Lakes (10-12) with 17 points, while Kylie Jozwik had 9 points and Brittany Washington scored eight.

New Trier 63, Libertyville 54: The visiting Wildcats lost the nonconference game.

Lydia Crow led Libertyville (9-10) with 14 points, while Emma Manolovic (season-high 11) and Margaret Buchert (10) scored in double figures as well. Lauren Huber had 8 points in the loss.

"New Trier is a talented team, and we played well in spurts against them," Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen said.

Peoria Manual 49, Mundelein 47: At Kewanee National Guard Armory, the Mustangs' shot at the buzzer missed, denying them their second win of the day.

Morgan Frank tied her season high of 20 points (three 3-pointers) for Mundelein (7-14, 2-2 tourney), which led 11-9 after one quarter, 29-18 at halftime and 39-32 after three. Hannah Buscher scored 9 points, and Ellie Maldonado had 6 points and 9 rebounds.

The Mustangs placed Frank and Buscher on the all-tournament team.

Mundelein 58, Kewanee 40: At Kewanee National Guard Armory, in their first of two games on the day, the Mustangs led 20-10 after one quarter and 31-24 at halftime.

Hannah Buscher scored 12 points (two 3-pointers) to pace Mundelein, while Morgan Frank had 9 points and 6 rebounds.
