Buzzer-beating putback lifts Grayslake North

James Connolly scored on an offensive rebound to beat the buzzer, lifting Grayslake North's boys basketball team to a 58-56 win in overtime over Richmond-Burton in Lake Zurich's sixth annual Martin Luther King Classic on Monday.

The win avenged a Thanksgiving-tournament loss to the Rockets. Grayslake North (5-11) finished 2-2 in the tournament.

Connolly finished with 19 points, and James Connolly had 13.

Geneva 67, Grayslake North 56: At Lake Zurich, in their first game of the day, the Knights trailed 17-10 after one quarter, 33-23 at halftime and 54-39 after three.

James Connolly had 19 points and 12 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season for Grayslake North. Ryan Connolly and Jamon Thomas scored 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Streamwood 70, Mundelein 50: At Lake Zurich, the Mustangs' loss in their final game of the Martin Luther King Classic snapped their three-game winning streak.

Tommy Marcotte's 15 points paced Mundelein (12-8), which also got 11 from Jeff Bikus. Andrew Silva and Conor Enright scored 7 points apiece for the Mustangs.

Mundelein 70, Woodstock 56: At Lake Zurich, Andrew Silva scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, as the Mustangs won their first game of the day and their third straight overall to improve to 3-1 in the sixth annual Martin Luther King Classic.

Jeff Bikus added 18 points for Mundelein (12-7), and Scottie Ebube had eight.

Lake Zurich 51, Addison Trail 37: At Lake Zurich, Peter DiCerbo scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, grabbed 6 rebounds and collected 3 steals, as the host Bears won the morning game to advance to the championship game of their sixth annual Martin Luther King Classic.

Ryan Kutsor added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Lake Zurich (14-5, 4-0 tournament), which won for the seventh time in its last eight games.

Addison Trail (10-10, 3-1 tournament) received 11 points each from J.T. Daniels and Connor Palesch (three 3-pointers).

Up 20-11 at halftime, Lake Zurich saw Addison Trail score the first 6 points of the third quarter on a Palesch 3 and three-point play by Albert White. But after the Bears called timeout with 6:29 left in the third, they responded with an 11-0 run that started with a Kutsor 3-pointer and also included 6 points from DiCerbo, whose baby hook had the Bears up 31-17 with 3:09 left in the quarter.

DiCerbo's buzzer-beating layup off a dish from JR Cison ended the first half.

"We were lethargic out of halftime," Lake Zurich coach Billy Pitcher said. "We just needed a little wake-up call. Giving the ball to Kutsor in an isolation situation is a always a good thing for us, and then we were able to get into our press, and I think that was big in the game."

DiCerbo went 6 of 6 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to help the Bears keep their double-digit lead throughout. Joe Heffernan chipped in 8 points, including a fourth-quarter 3-pointer, 4 rebounds and 2 steals for Lake Zurich.

Addison Trail committed 17 turnovers.

Latin 66, Wauconda 58: At Niles North, the Bulldogs lost their finale in the Martin Luther King tournament, after winning their first game of the day.

Donovan Carter scored 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, for Wauconda (6-12, 1-3 tourney). The Bulldogs received 9 points apiece from Nick Rinchiuso, Jimmy Ott and Andrew Nolan.

Wauconda 55, Lake View 37: At Niles North, the Bulldogs started the day with a win, as Donovan Carter scored 18 points.

Jimmy Ott (11) and Andrew Nolan (10) also scored in double figures for Wauconda, which led 21-8 after one quarter and 33-16 at halftime. Lake View pulled within 42-33 after three but then got outscored by the Bulldogs 13-4 in the fourth.

Warren 52, Huntley 48: At Wheaton Warrenville South, the Blue Devils won, despite playing without leading scorer Branden Ellis, as Barak Diehl scored 11 points and Jacob Rich added 10.

Warren also got 9 points from Adnan Sarancic and eight from David Catanus.

Rock Island 66, Warren 64 (OT): At Wheaton Warrenville South, the Blue Devils fell in overtime.

Barak Diehl scored 15 points for Warren, while Ryan Short and Jacob Rich each had 10. Ian Schilling tallied 9 points on three 3-pointers. Warren played without leading scorer Branden Ellis.
