Fenton clobbers Guerin

For a young Fenton team that is growing on a daily basis, seeing the basketball go through the basket has been an issue this winter.

That wasn't a problem Friday night.

Led by a personal-high five 3-pointers from sophomore Ivan Sosa, the Bison easily reached a season's best in points in a 67-27 victory over Guerin.

The Metro Suburban Conference crossover win in Bensenville was Fenton's second in a row as the Bison improved to 4-12 overall.

"It was the crowd," said Sosa, one of three sophomores along with a freshman that are part of the starting lineup. "It's a Friday night, everyone was hyped. We've been working hard at practice. We are such a young team and we are like sponges. We absorb everything and it's starting to transfer over from practice."

Leading 15-7 after the opening eight minutes, the home team used a 21-5 second-quarter run to grab control. Amari Reed, the lone senior among the starting group, scored 9 of his 11 points during that stretch while Brad Koch poured in all 6 of his.

Diamon King then contributed 7 of his 14 points in the third as the advantage swelled to 55-19 heading into the fourth.

"We played together," said King, who is averaging 9.1 points and 7.7 rebounds on the year. "Everyone came out with energy and we did exactly what coach said - we gave everything we've got. Every day in practice, we are learning to work together and we are learning to support each other. This wasn't that surprising, I knew we could do it. It's just about us learning to work together.

"It's a new year and a new hunger. We just have to keep going for it. Just play every game like it's our first game. If we keep working hard, the sky is the limit for us."

Sosa finished with a game-high 18 points, which included a four-point play in the fourth quarter.

"Our freshmen and sophomores are going up against juniors and seniors," said Fenton coach Chaz Taft, whose team had reached 50 points in only two contests coming in. "So it's been tough for us to get to the basket, the same thing with getting shots and running our offense. It's a strength issue. But we are starting to figure it out a little bit.

"We knew coming in that we lost a lot of seniors from last year. But I love coaching young kids, they have a lot of energy. It's a process with what we want to do and they just have to trust the process."

Gerald Crawford topped Guerin (3-10) with 12 points.
