Conant gets past Meadows; Maine West in semifinals

Conant's girls basketball team, which lost on buzzer beater to Cary-Grove on Tuesday, made sure their second game at the Libertyville Tournament on Wednesday wasn't going to be decided in the final seconds again.

The Cougars built a 29-24 halftime lead and prevailed 44-35 over Rolling Meadows.

Senior Cate Fitzgerald led the Cougars with 12 points, including three 3-pointers. The senior guard also had a pair of assists and rebounds.

Stephanie Mazurek added 8 points with 11 rebounds and 3 assists while Ania Baker tossed in 10 points with 7 rebounds. Lauren Murphy scored 7 points with 4 rebounds as coach Deirdre Naughton's Cougars improved to 4-10.

The Mustangs (10-5) were led by Alexis Davis and Melissa Spiwak (two 3-pointers) who each had 12 points. Bridget Rolla added 6.

Maine West 63, Fenwick 40: Maine West (15-0) advanced to the semifinals of the Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown High School as Rachel Kent (14 points) and Alisa Fallon (13 points, 6 assists) led the way. Allison Pearson (5 assists) and Jessica Riedl (4 rebounds) each contributed 10 points while Angela Dugalic collected 9 points and 7 rebounds.

The Warriors will face Hononegah in today's 6:30 p.m. semifinal followed by Trinity vs. Naperville Central in the 8 p.m. semifinal.

Prospect 67, Barrington 62: Senior Emily Frasco led the Knights (8-4) with 24 points and 5 assists while Jessica Kowalczyk added 16 points with 4 rebounds and 3 steals in the Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown.

Also reaching double figures for Prospect was Sara Biesterfeldt (10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals).

Ashley Adams chipped in 6 points with 2 rebounds while Stephanie Kowalczyk had 4 assists and 4 points. Margherite Pettenuzzo grabbed 3 rebounds.

Sophomore Taylor Thompson led Barrington (4-10) with a game-high 25 points and 9 rebounds. Also reaching double figures were Tori Meyer (14 points) and Anna Mae King (10 points, 3 rebounds).

Tess Conforti had 10 rebounds and 4 rebounds for the Fillies while Shanna Turczynski collected 7 rebounds.

The Fillies will face South Elgin today at 11 a.m. while the Knights will meet Hampshire at 2 p.m.

Resurrection 59, Buffalo Grove 58: Buffalo Grove (1-13) was led by Kendra Lee (15 points, 8 rebounds), Alyssa Floro (13 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds), Jackie Bickhaus (9 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds), Sydney Fortman (8 points, 6 rebounds) and Macy Floro (7 points, 2 assists) in the consolation game at Dundee-Crown. The Bison face St. Charles North at 9:30 a.m. today.

Schaumburg 43, Glenbard North 41: Schaumburg (2-12) raced out to a 14-2 lead in the consolation game at the Wheaton North Falcon Classic.

The Saxons were led by Vicky Aguirre (10 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists), Kendall Fredrickson (7 points, 8 rebounds) and Sydney Sturino (6 points, 2 rebounds).

Kayla Patterson chipped in 5 points with 3 assists while Emma Aguilar had 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Meghan Luecht also grabbed 6 rebounds with 5 points.

Schaumburg will meet Elk Grove at 1:30 p.m. today.

Elk Grove 63 Willowbrook 24: Elk Grove (8-8) won its first game in the Wheaton North consolation bracket behind Megan Murray (12 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds), Isabella Tierney (12 points, Zoe Blomquist (11 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds) and Sydney Marquis (8 points, 3 rebounds).

Rachel Kandefer grabbed 5 rebounds with 2 assists and 6 points for the Grens while Alyssa Trausch had 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Emma Simmons pulled down 3 rebounds and had 2 assists.

Elk Grove led 22-3 after one quarter.

St. Viator 37, Glenbrook North 28: Senior Myia Clark led the Lions (9-5) with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal in St. Viator's second win at its own Blenner Classic. Teammates Michaela Mueller (3 rebounds, 3 steals) and Natalie Krause (1 steal) each had 6 points.

Wheeling 58, Leyden 38: Morgan Collar led the Wildcats with a game-high 24 points while Nosa Igiehon added 19 points at the Blenner Classic at St. Viator. Nansy Velev added 8 and Chloe Drozdz 6 for the Wildcats (9-5). Leyden was led by Yaritza Frias' 8 points.
