Near miss for Meadows; Barrington makes Jacobs semifinals

Rolling Meadows' boys basketball team saw a big fourth-quarter rally come up short by a bucket in opening-round play Tuesday at the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York High School in Elmhurst.

The Mustangs scored 21 points in the fourth quarter but fell 60-58 against highly touted Hinsdale South.

Max Christie led all scorers with 23 points for Rolling Meadows (4-6), which next faces Glenbard East at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Christie, a freshman forward, made 10 of 17 shots including a pair of 3s. Ryan Carney had 14 points and Gio Carrillo had 9.

Rolling Meadows shot exceptionally well from 2-point range, making 23 of 33 attempts. But only 3 of its 17 long-range shots went through.

Hinsdale South's top scorers were Zion Griffin (19 points), Ramon Norman (17) and Aaron Tims (15). The Hornets outrebounded the Mustangs 27-15.

Hinsdale South advances to a 5 p.m. Wednesday matchup against Metea Valley in the second round of the championship bracket.

Naperville North 75, Elk Grove 50: The Grenadiers were outmatched by the unbeaten Huskies in first-round action Tuesday evening at York.

Dylan Ingebrigtsen paced Elk Grove with 12 points. Tyler Selvig finished with 10 and Shivam Amin had 9; both made three 3s.

Naperville North held the Grens (0-12) to 3 points in the first quarter. Elk Grove converted on 14 of 16 free throws but committed 17 turnovers.

Barrington 65, Lakes 52: Junior guard Mark Johnson scored a game-high 22 points, helping the Broncos finish 3-0 in pool play at the Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs.

The game was tied at the half before Barrington (8-2) outscored the Eagles in both of the last two quarters.

Johnson hit a pair of 3s while senior guard Anthony Spann had 1 and finished with 16 points.

Junior guard Jason Boock had 9 points, including 5-for-6 at the foul line. Barrington made 24 of 32 free throws, while Lakes went 5-for-9.

Next for Barrington is a 6 p.m. Wednesday championship semifinal matchup against Bartlett, which topped Prairie Ridge 53-42 on Tuesday to finish 3-0 in its pool.

Crystal Lake South and Jacobs also went 3-0 in pool play and will meet in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
