Hampshire falls to Hononegah

For the better part of Tuesday's opener at the 35th Annual Komaromy Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown, the Hampshire girls basketball team hung with a talented Hononegah squad.

Then Jordan King made her presence felt.

Hononegah's standout junior took over the game midway through the third quarter and led the Indians (13-2) to an eventual 46-32 win over the Whip-Purs.

"Jordan King is a good player," said Hampshire coach Mike Featherly. "I thought Sarah Bowen did a good job on her for the most part but we have to make better decisions."

Turnovers against Hononegah's press hurt the Whips (5-9) and King turned several of them into points.

Holding a 24-20 lead after Hampshire's Ally Cermak hit a 3-pointer with 4:26 left in the third quarter, the Indians went on a 14-3 run to finish the period ahead 38-23. King scored 10 of those points, including hitting two 3-pointers, and finished with a game-high 19 points.

Down 40-23 midway through the fourth quarter the Whips, who will play South Elgin at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the consolation bracket, didn't quit. A Cermak 3-pointer with 4:16 left to play cut Hononegah's lead to 40-30 but the Indians, who face New Trier in a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal on Wednesday, were able to ice the basketball and make free throws down the stretch while holding Hampshire to a Bowen layup with five second to go.

Freshman Kelby Bannerman led Hampshire with 14 points before fouling out with just under two minutes left. Cermak added 10 points for the Whips.

Carly Schmitz had 11 points for Hononegah, which made seven 3-pointers in the game. Hannah Malcomso contributed 9 points for the Indians.

"I thought we had a couple good looks early on that just didn't fall," said Featherly. "But we battled and we played hard."
