Fremd ekes out win at Exam Jamm

Fremd's girls basketball team is young but the Vikings keep finding ways to win.

With sophomore Emily Klaczek leading the way with 18 points, the Vikings held on for a dramatic 48-47 win over Vernon Hills, which missed a shot at the buzzer in the Exam Jamm game at Lake Zurich High School on Tuesday night.

"Emily had a real nice game," said Fremd coach Dave Yates of the Vikings' only returning starter from last year's Class 4A final four entry. "She knocked down some big shots. They even went box-and-one on her, so that shows you she was in a groove."

The Vikings (8-4) led by 9 points after three quarters and were up 7 with 1:30 remaining.

Julie Neary (10 points) hit two big 3-pointers and the Cougars (7-4) tied the game 47-47 before Fremd hit a free throw for the 1-point lead.

Kayla Caudle led the Cougars with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 6 steals

"I thought at times we did a good job on her (Caudle)," Yates said. "She is a difficult matchup. She is so athletic and we knew that coming in."

Freshman Ruthie Montella added 8 points for Fremd followed by Angie Zara (6) and Olivia Hill (5).

Colleen Kennedy, Caroline Cochran, Maddy McCarthy and Crystal Kim also made it into the scoring column for the Vikings.

Maine West 51, Evanston 39: Maine West senior guard Catherine Johnson (two 3-pointers) scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the visiting Warriors (11-0) in the Central Suburban League crossover match.

Teammate Rachel Kent also scored 16 points while Allison Pearson (two 3-pointers) and Angela Dugalic each chipped in 7 points followed by Alisa Fallon (5 points).

Barrington 41, Grayslake North 37: Sophomore Taylor Thompson hit a personal best three 3-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points as Barrington (4-6) won the nonconference event over host Knights (5-5).

"Taylor played a really strong game at both ends of the floor," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "Defensively, her rebounding was huge for us. Offensively, she did a nice job finishing around the basket and stepping out and hitting the 3-pointers."

Junior Tori Meyer (10 points) made 8 of 10 free throws in the final five minutes of the game.

"It was tight in the fourth quarter and she put those free throws away which gave us a nice cushion," Barreiro said. "Grayslake North has a nice team and they were closing the deficit a bit. I thought our girls kept their composure pretty well down the stretch."

Shanna Turczynski added 7 points for the Fillies with a 3-pointer.

Elk Grove 73, Fenton 45: Alyssa Trausch (14 points), Megan Murray (11 points, 6 steals), Rachel Kandefer (8 points, 8 rebounds) and Isabella Tierney (11 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists) led the visiting Grenadiers (6-5) in the nonconference game.

Simeon 52, Rolling Meadows 42: Chicago Public League entry Simeon won the Exam Jamm test over Rolling Meadows (7-4) at Lake Zurich High School.

Senior guard Melissa Spiwak led the Mustangs with 19 points.

"We did some really good things tonight," said Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "But to beat a team like Simeon, we needed to maintain that level of play for four quarters."

St. Charles North 51, Palatine 42: The North Stars shot 53.8 percent from the floor (21-of-39) to win the ExamJamm contest at Lake Zurich.

Sydney Rzepka (14 points, 8 rebounds), Jenny Myslinski (10 points, two 3-pointers) and Kendra Lindell (7 points) led the Pirates (7-2), who received 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists from Kacie Filian.

Cary-Grove 51, Conant 23: Senior guard Taylor Cyr scored 6 points with a pair of 3-pointers for the host Cougars (2-7) in the nonconference game. Classmate Lauren Murphy also had 3-pointer.
