Close call, but Vernon Hills falls short against Fremd

Vernon Hills' girls basketball team manufactured a fourth-quarter rally but saw it fall just short.

Fremd pulled out a 48-47 win Tuesday night at Lake Zurich as part of the ExamJamm.

Fremd made a free throw to go up 1 in the final seconds. The Cougars, who trailed by nine points in the fourth quarter, could not make their last shot and saw their four-game winning streak end.

Kayla Caudle led Vernon Hills (7-4) with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 6 steals. Julia Neary had 10 points, including a pair of big 3-pointers during the Cougars' comeback.

Nicole Piper added 8 points, including two 3-pointers, for Vernon Hills.

"We played hard the entire way and put ourselves in a position to win," Cougars coach Paul Brettner said. "This was great experience for our players."

Lake Park 57, Libertyville 47: At Lake Zurich, as part of the ExamJamm, the Wildcats lost despite sophomore guard Margaret Buchert's 19 points.

Morgan Manski and Maddie Spaulding had 9 and 7 points, respectively, for Libertyville (5-5).
