St. Viator wins at Marian Catholic

St. Viator's boys basketball team got its East Suburban Catholic Conference slate off to a winning start by topping highly regarded Marian Catholic 62-60 on Friday in Chicago Heights.

The Lions (6-1 overall) led by 10 points entering the fourth quarter and weathered a 22-point finish from Marian.

St. Viator's Trey Calvin led all scorers with 22 points, which included a pair of 3s, and Jeremiah Hernandez had 13.

The Lions' Peter Lambesis finished with 15 points, 10 of which came in the first quarter as St. Viator outscored Marian Catholic 21-14.

Down the stretch, the Lions' Matt Doersching had the key play.

With St. Viator trailing 56-55 with under a minute to play, Doersching hit a jumper to put the Lions up for good. Calvin added a pair of free throws and Doersching hit another as the Lions were able to hang on.

"We wanted to limit their penetration and keep them out of the paint," St. Viator coach Quin Hayes said. "Offensively we were patient and showed some great poise after leading the whole game.

"We ended up being down 1 with minute to go. That's when 'Dorsh' knocked down a corner jump shot on a great assist from Hernandez."

Rolling Meadows 61, Elk Grove 43: The host Mustangs kept the Grens to 5 points in the second quarter, helping them take command in a decisive Mid-Suburban East triumph.

Max Christie led all scorers with 15 points, which included 9-for-10 at the free throw line, as Rolling Meadows (3-4, 1-1) won for the second straight time and the third time in its last four.

Gio Carrillo and Ryan Carney both finished with 11 points for the Mustangs.

Elk Grove (0-8, 0-2) got 11 points from Dylan Ingebrigtsen, 8 from Amin Shivam and 7 from Sean Cherry.

Buffalo Grove 63, Wheeling 44: It was only a 2-point game at the half, but the visiting Bison allowed 9 points in the third quarter and 5 in the fourth on their way to an MSL East victory that kept them tied with Prospect for the division lead.

Jack Vaselaney led the way for Buffalo Grove (5-3, 2-0) with a 19-point performance which included 6-for-6 at the foul line. Tom Trieb had 14 points and Mac Camardo had 11 as the Bison finished 10-for-11 on free throws.

Phil Bucko and Jeremy Kim both had 11 points for the Wildcats (2-6, 0-2).

Of Wheeling's 16 field goals, 12 were from 3-point range. DJ Godlewski, Bucko and Kim each finished with three 3s.

Conant 60, Schaumburg 42: The host Cougars picked up their first MSL West win of the season behind an 18-point, 12-rebound, 4-assist performance from senior forward Ryan Davis.

Ben Schols contributed 16 points and Jonathan Kolev had 9 points and 5 assists for Conant (4-3, 1-1).

Schaumburg slipped to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the MSL West.

Maine West 48, Deerfield 40: In a Central Suburban North matchup in Des Plaines, Maine West won for the second straight time and also earned its first conference victory.

Maine West improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the CSL North.
