Scouting Leyden

WEST SUBURBAN GOLDLeydenLast year: 8-19

Top returners: Jose Alvarado (6-3, Sr., F), Mike Wilms (5-10, Sr., G), Mike DeBeasi (5-10, Sr., G), Jose Martinez (5-10, Sr., G)

Outlook: For coach Bill Heisler, it's largely a matter of getting the pieces in their places. That may take some time, as the Eagles will be trying to develop a new identity following the graduation of post standout DeAndre Williams. "He was able to really do some great things around the basket, so that will be a big hole for us to fill," said Heisler. "On the other hand, we should be allowed to play a little bit faster and with a bit more freedom offensively. I think our guys are looking forward to that." Leyden gets some size back in senior forward Jose Alvarado, who was out last year with an injury but brings a promising skill set. Heisler will count on him for rebounding and scoring. "He's athletic enough that he can make a big difference for us," Heisler said. Three guards with significant experience return - Mike Wilms, Jose Martinez and Mike DeBeasi. Of that group, Heisler says Martinez might be the most well-rounded, but Wilms (the football team's QB) and DeBeasi will see plenty of court time. Junior Jacob Fiala is among the players capable of stretching defenses with shooting range, and Heisler's hope is that he'll have other candidates step forward. With so many moving parts, Heisler will be patient as this team finds its own identity. "There's no doubt we'll be small, but we have guys that I know will compete. At this point, we're just eager to get out there and play somebody." The Eagles will get that chance over Thanksgiving week, starting with tournament host Ridgewood on Monday, before beginning play in the rugged West Suburban Gold. And Leyden will again compete in Glenbard West's tournament in late December.
