Waubonsee CC stays alive at JUCO nationals

Deon Ward scored a game-high 27 points Wednesday as the Waubonsee Community College men's basketball team defeated Southern Maryland 92-81 in the consolation bracket of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Danville, Ill.

Germaine Roebuck scored 18 points and St. Charles North graduate Alec Goetz added 17 points and 6 assists for the Chiefs. Tyrone Carey had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Jake Pike added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Chiefs, who led 47-37 at halftime and maintained the advantage through the second half.

Waubonsee (26-9) shot 53 percent for the game, making 35 of 66 shot attempts. The Chiefs also outrebounded Southern Maryland 35-31.

The Chiefs will play Friday at 9 a.m. and with a win would advance to the seventh-place game on Saturday.
