Hampshire, Kaneland win regional openers

Tre Powell scored 24 points Monday night as the Hampshire boys basketball team defeated Belvidere North 63-53 in the opening round of the Class 4A Rockford Jefferson regional.

Nate Cork, Billy Dumoulin and Nate Gomez added 11 points each for the No. 9 seed Whip-Purs (8-21), who will face No. 1 seed Rockford Boylan Tuesday in the semifinals.

Kaneland 61, IMSA 39: Dan Franck's 21 points led Kaneland (9-20) to this win in the opening round of the Class 3A Sycamore regional. Kaneland will face Aurora Central Catholic Tuesday in the semifinals.

Wheeling 60, Dundee-Crown 36: Gabriel Bergeron had 11 points and Jack Orndahl added 8 for D-C (4-23) at the Class 4A Lake Zurich regional.
